Smiths Bush is on the North Shore, Auckland, New Zealand. There is a loop track taking about 30 - 40 minutes to walk at a leisurely pace taking you back in time with the old puriri trees. I am surprised how many people I talk to haven't been there - it's very close to the motorway (in fact cuts through it) and also close to Takapuna, Milford, Northcote and Glenfield shops.
This poor bush-cricket missed a hind leg. Not sure about the genus and species. Family is tettigoniidae, maybe it's an eupholidoptera megastyla.

7 trees sprang up in back of my house, all volunteers, last year. This spring, life gifted me this bush right outside my bedroom window!
I feel SO blessed!

Who am I? I am a large bird with long legs
Where do I live? On the ground on the edges of forest and in people’s gardens
What do I eat? Insects and frogs
What do I do? I make a mournful sound at night that goes “wee loo, wee loo”
What is special about me? I remind people of ghosts
