Birds in the foreground, the middleground and the background on the marina walls in Oriental Bay. The nearest two rows all seemed to be of the same species. The distant wall at the top left held a different (white headed) breed. And then there were the ducks on the water.

..part of the defences from a long gone era of Dover Harbour and Castle..

I took this shot from a Thames Clipper river taxi as we approached the Greenwich Peninsula

When I saw on the news that HMS Bulwark was paying a five-day visit to Greenwich I decided to head into town to take a few shots of her. Impressive as she is the Bulwark is no Ark Royal when it comes to sheer presence and capability.

HMS Bulwark ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Bulwark_(L15) ) is an Albion Class amphibious assault warship commissioned into service with the Royal Navy in 2004 and was recently refitted at the Royal Naval Dockyard.

As Chatham was one of the main Royal Dockyards, the Royal Naval section of Woodlands Cemetery in Gillingham is the final resting place of hundreds who died in the first and second world wars.

Usually these men would have died of injuries in the nearby hospitals or, as seen on the grave at the front of this picture, in the explosions in the River Medway which destroyed HMS Bulwark and the Princess Irene and killed 1,115 men.

The black grave stones here date from the First World War. They pre-date the standard ones used by the Imperial War Graves Commission (later the Commonwealth War Graves Commission), and are usually the Admiralty's own pattern.

Occasionally though, a white one can be found, presumably one which was erected after the war.

Visit the Historic Medway site for more details of the HMS Bulwark and Princess irene.

This boat became the Joseph J Luna which was the Boston Fire Boat for many years. After it was retired, My father bought it and we lived aboard from 1979 until I moved out in the late eighties. He still lives on her today
