Culross Pier

The original pier consisted of a stone-built structure about 100m out into the Forth linked to another stone pier attached to the shore by a wooden platform. With the construction of the new railway line along the edge of the shore which opened in 1906, an embankment was built out from the original shoreline for the railway to run along and this cut the shore side of the pier in half. Only the end which attached to the wooden platform still extended into the Forth. The northern end can still be seen between the road and railway
Over time both sections of stone pier deteriorated and the wooden platform almost completely disappeared. In 2007 work started to restore the pier and volunteers have since rebuilt the platform (seen here) in the same form as the original, linking the shore to the outer structure once again. With the platform in place, it is now easier to continue the work on the outer pier.
The small warning notice on the right reads 'Keep off in strong winds'.
