Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire owes it's very existance to its position on the Eastern bank of the River Trent. This is one of England's major waterways, and the Town was an important port for some years. It's waterfront is still lined with old (mainly Georgian) brick warehouses, many of which (including this one) are now grade 2 listed. Many have also been converted into flats, the Town's days as a port having sadly passed.

This curved glass building will be the new John Lewis store which is re-locating from the old George Henry Lees building off Williamson Square to here. Some have found this rather distressing as George Henry Lees belongs in Williamson Square and not down by the river. The Radio City Tower can be seen in the background, whilst the row of shops in the middle of the image are on Paradise Street and date from the late 1800's.

Art Nouveau and Art Deco details everywhere!

Do you need to be connected?

Damn it....thought I'd fixed that light leak.

Ishpeming, Michigan

Listed 12/29/2015

Reference Number: 15000946

The Braastad-Gossard Building was erected in 1888 and remodeled and expanded in 1903-04 for Frederick Braastad as the home of his F. Braastad & Co. department store and then remodeled and modernized in 1948 while it housed the H. W. Gossard factory. The building meets national register criterion A and B because of its direct association with Braastad, who was an early, longtime, and leading Ishpeming businessman, and with the Braastad department store, a leading commercial institution in Ishpeming until its closing in the early 1920s. The building also meets critenon A under Industry and Social History for housing the Ishpeming plant of the H. W. Gossard Co., a Chicago-based women's undergarment manufacturer, from 1920 until1976. Gossard was for a time the leading employer in Ishpeming, with more than 500 employees on its payroll. Secondly, the firm's presence in Ishpeming relates to a broad Upper Peninsula mining town - and also national - industrial pattern of textile plants setting up shop in mining towns to take advantage of a potentially large and low-cost labor force of women from the mining families who would be willing to work to supplement the family income. In addition, Gossard's Ishpeming plant operating out of this building was the site of a strike in 1949 that is important in Upper Peninsula history for the leading role played by women in beginning and carrying out the strike.

The famous art deco skyscraper at 319 metres (1,047 ft) tall was the tallest building in the world for a short time before being overtaken by the Empire State Building. Constructed between 1929 and 1930, the tower (including its spire) is now tied in height for second place in NYC with the NY Times Building. The 77 story building was designed by architect William van Alen and originally housed the Chrysler Corporation.

The building is considered a masterpiece of art deco architecture thanks to the signature crown of seven radiating terraced arches that are illuminated at night, and the automobile-inspired details on the 31st and 61st floors.

It is without a doubt my favourite New York skyscraper. Seen here from the observation deck of the Empire State Building

Designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter's is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and one of the largest churches in the world. St. Peter's is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites.

By Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, also according to tradition, the first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica.

Construction of the present basilica, replacing the Old St. Peter's Basilica of the 4th century, began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.

This store opened as Albertsons in the late 1990's in a former K-Mart building. It replaced a smaller older Albertsons nearby. Only Save Mart would use its "bay area banner" Lucky 2 hours north of San Francisco in Ukiah but not an hour south of San Francisco in Salinas.

The Red Road Flats are a high-rise housing complex which lies between the districts of Balornock and Barmulloch in the north east of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It consists of eight multi-storey blocks. Two are "slabs", much wider in cross-section than they are deep. Six are "points" — more of a traditional tower block shape. The slabs have 25-32 floors, the points 31, and taken together they were designed for a population of 4,700 people. The point blocks are among the tallest buildings in Glasgow at 89 metres (292 ft), second in overall height behind the Gallowgate Twins (109 Bluevale Street/51 Whitevale Street) in Camlachie, but still hold the record for the highest occupied floor level of any building in Glasgow, and the roof of the point blocks are the tallest man made point above sea level within the city boundaries

It was late October 2006 when I took these pictures, it was also the first snow of the season.

After making myself an omelet for breakfast this morning, I promptly got a text from Amanda about brunch. Obviously I said yes. I met her at Egg House Cafe, where we talked about Taco Giorno. That chick actually bought a ravioli press! Looks like our Raviotillas just hit the next level of legitimacy.

Mom and Dad came to town to rebuild part of the fence at Westridge Manor. I headed straight over there after brunch and helped them out. Emily’s out of town, so what else am I gonna do, right? I showed off the X a little bit, and then we got to work! We got just about the whole thing done too. I really expected fence building to be a lot more complicated.

As we finished working, I got on my phone and realized there was yet another mass shooting today. This one was in a small town in Texas, of all places. It’s still too early to talk about gun control though, so don’t bring it up.

Kitty made tasty fajitas for dinner, and so I paid extra close attention when she made the tortillas. Turns out she made flour tortillas, so it didn’t help me much. Back at home I started watching Mindhunter. So far so good!
