Three of the famous buildings in the Bund row. View them on a black background.

Left: The Peace Hotel (和平饭店). Formerly called Sassoon House and Cathay Hotel, completed in 1929. The building has an "A"-shaped footprint, is ten storeys tall, in parts thirteen storeys. In total the building stands 77 metres tall. The green color of the pyramidal roof is caused by it's exterior copper coating.

After a 3 year renovation it reopened in 2010 as the "Fairmont Peace Hotel Shanghai".

Middle: The 18-storey tall old Bank of China Building (中国银行大楼) was built on the site of the former German Club. It housed the headquarters of the Bank of China. The cut-off appearance of the building's top is allegedly caused by Victor Sassoon's insistence that no other building on the Bund could rise higher than his (Sassoon House) - the original design was for 34 storeys and the foundations were actually built to bear this load.

The foundation-laying ceremony was in 1936, but the war started by the Japanese in 1937 postponed the completion of the building - actually the Bank of China did not move into the building until 1946.

Right: ICBC (Industrial and Commercial Bank of China), the former Yokohama Specie Bank Building (横滨正金银行大楼). Build in 1924, six storeys tall. After the revolution in 1949 it became home of the People's Bank of China, in 1956 the Shanghai Textile Industry Bureau moved in, now it houses the ICBC Shanghai Branch.

View from Flatiron Plaza across from Madison Square Park, New York City, New York

The distinctive triangular shape of the Flatiron Building, designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and built in 1902, allowed it to fill the wedge-shaped property located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway in Manhattan. The building has vertical Renaissance palazzo with Beaux-Arts styling the epitomizes the style developed amoung Chicago architects at the time. The building was intended to serve as offices for the George A. Fuller Company, a major Chicago contracting firm. At 22 stories and 307 feet, the Flatiron was never the city’s tallest building nor largest buildings, however many argue it is one of New York's most dramatic-looking,. Because of its popularity with photographers and artists it has become an enduring symbol of New York City.

This year Stagecoach South East is supporting the Royal British Legion by adorning a member of their fleet in an all over white wrap displaying a number of poppies. Dover allocated 15442 KX08 KZN has been chosen which is rather fitting given the towns military and naval history. It's seen here on Leopold Street, Ramsgate whilst working the hourly extension of route 43 from Sandwich to Westwood Cross. Thursday 8th November 2018.

The last stop is the town’s landmark, the mill, which can be seen from the Inn. The old Mandø Mill, a Dutch windmill from 1832, has functioned as a mill up to the WW II. The restoration, done between 2008 and 2009, maintained the mill’s early look and function and reused original parts. Today, the mill is fully functional and can mill grain. Visit the little store inside the mill. All profits go to the mill in full.

The Sompo Japan Head Office Building (損保ジャパン本社ビル Sonpo Japan Honsha Biru) is the corporate headquarters for Sompo Japan Insurance. It is located in the district Nishi-Shinjuku in Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. At 200 metres (656 ft), the building is the 28th tallest building in Tokyo and the 33rd tallest in Japan. It was designed by Yoshikazu Uchida.

On the 42nd floor is Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art, where one of Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers" series of paintings is located.(Wikipedia)

The shape of Sompo Building was inspired by the Mount Fuji and look much like the old Atari logo.

I thought that friends who are long time residents of the hamlet next to the one in which this building is located could tell me its former use, but they could not. It must have been abandoned many years ago.

There is no evidence of a slab for gas pumps or even a driveway leading to this building. There is an intriguing set of stairs in the back to the second floor.

I shall investigate further by looking in the front door and/or talking to hamlet residents.

During the renovation of the Jefferson Building in the 1980s, restorers discovered that the metallic ornamentation of the ceiling, once thought to be silver leaf, is actually aluminum leaf. When the building was being constructed during the 1890s, aluminum was more precious than silver. The scale-pattern design of the six large skylights mirrors the pattern of the marble flooring beneath.
