Manhatten and Brooklyn Bridges

I hate these concrete pyramid tunnel things in NYC playgrounds. They are like head traumas waiting to happen.

Here¹s how we celebrated St. Patrick¹s Day 2008...by wearing green T-shirts

and having a couple Guinness at homeexactly the way it should be. New York

was full of 20 something bridge and tunnel drunks stumbling around midtown

in the worst green outfits you ever did see! And it¹s Monday...this is

going to make for a tough rest of the week for some folks.

You can¹t tell in the pictures, but Tess is doing amazing! She¹s puling

herself along the furniture and can walk holding hands so it¹s only a matter

of time before she¹s running around on her own. Verbally, we still can¹t

understand a word she¹s saying, but she¹s got a lot to say, so soon the

babble too will become coherent!

It¹s nice to see the light evenings and the sun warming the days...we can

feel spring around the corner.

the absolutely incredible model train landscape at The Living Desert animal preserve and botanical gardens. the whole thing was probably 30 or 40 yards long and 20 yards wide and had several small towns and scenes and mountains and gorges and a river and bridges and tunnels and many trains and tracks. jay took video, which hopefully he'll post soon.

Hogs & Heifers, More details on Wcities.com. New York City can be a very strange place indeed. How else do you explain a Southern dive bar that catered to Meatpacking District truck drivers being transformed into a celebrity infested hot spot? The likes of Julia Roberts and Dennis Quaid may not be dancing on the bar anymore, but there are plenty of young downtowners; and Bridge and Tunnelers from New Jersey still coming here.

This pedestrian and car tunnel opened in 1911, offering Hamburg residents a much more easier and direct route to the large docks. It is still there doing what it was built for, but other bridges and tunnels have since opened, which are now more convenient for vehicle traffic, meaning it is not used by vehicles as much as it used to. It is still possible to drive a car though here though, using one of the car lifts. It is also very popular for pedestrians and cyclists.

Constructed in 1901, this was the tallest cantilever bridge in the world. It was used until 1969, when a new bridge and tunnel replaced it.

Club Baroque was one of New York City's newest, high-end, upscale, luxurious nightclubs located on the buzzing Steinway Street strip in Astoria, Queens. Only 10 minutes from midtown Manhattan and minutes from all major bridges and tunnels. As a resident DJ there it was an amazing jaw-dropping venue that boasts one of the best sound and lighting systems in NYC alongside a spacious 6500 square foot location featuring ornate, yet modern, baroque style décor. I enjoyed spinning there and loved the vibe. I was a part of the scene in Astoria, Queens since 2010. A great ride to say the least.

This is typical of the railroad trestles that span the deep valleys carved by streams and rivers in the Northern Plains. Bridging the coulees were a major challenge for railroad companies when the earliest lines were being built across the Upper Midwest plains in the 1880s.

The Brunel family tomb

Sir Marc Isambard Brunel FRS FRSE ( 25 April 1769 – 12 December 1849) was a French-British engineer who is most famous for the work he did in Britain. He constructed the Thames Tunnel and was the father of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Born in France, Brunel fled to the United States during the French Revolution. In 1796, he was appointed Chief Engineer of New York City. He moved to London in 1799, where he married Sophia Kingdom. In addition to the construction of the Thames Tunnel, his work as a mechanical engineer included the design of machinery to automate the production of pulley blocks for the Royal Navy.

Brunel preferred the given name Isambard, but is generally known to history as Marc to avoid confusion with his more famous son.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Isambard_Brunel

Sophia Kingdom (15 February 1775 – 5 January 1855), later known as Lady Brunel, was the mother of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Her father was William Kingdom, a contracting agent for the Royal Navy and the army, and her mother was Joan Spry. She was born in Plymouth, England.[1] She was the youngest of sixteen children. When she was eight years old, her father William died (1783).

Sophia Kingdom was sent to France to improve her knowledge of the French language. She became ill on the journey over, and whilst her travelling companions decided to return to England to avoid the escalating unrest in France, she was unable to accompany them and instead remained in France. While working there as a governess she met Marc Isambard Brunel (1769–1849) at Rouen in the early 1790s. In 1793, Marc Brunel had to flee the French Revolution, going to the United States, but Sophia remained in Rouen. During the Reign of Terror, she was arrested as an English spy, and daily expected to be executed. She was only saved by the fall of Robespierre in June 1794. In April 1795, Sophia Kingdom was able to leave France and travel to London.

Marc Brunel remained in the United States for six years, sailing for England in February 1799. He immediately searched for and found Sophia Kingdom in London. They married on 1 November 1799.

They had two daughters, Sophia Macnamara and Emma, followed by a son, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, born on 9 April 1806. Isambard was one of the greatest engineers of the 19th century

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sophia_Kingdom

Isambard Kingdom Brunel FRS MInstCE ( 9 April 1806 – 15 September 1859) was a British civil engineer and mechanical engineer who is considered "one of the most ingenious and prolific figures in engineering history", "one of the 19th-century engineering giants", and "one of the greatest figures of the Industrial Revolution, [who] changed the face of the English landscape with his groundbreaking designs and ingenious constructions". Brunel built dockyards, the Great Western Railway (GWR), a series of steamships including the first purpose-built transatlantic steamship, and numerous important bridges and tunnels. His designs revolutionised public transport and modern engineering.

Though Brunel's projects were not always successful, they often contained innovative solutions to long-standing engineering problems. During his career, Brunel achieved many engineering firsts, including assisting his father in the building of the first tunnel under a navigable river (the River Thames) and the development of the SS Great Britain, the first propeller-driven, ocean-going iron ship, which, when launched in 1843, was the largest ship ever built.

On the GWR, Brunel set standards for a well-built railway, using careful surveys to minimise gradients and curves. This necessitated expensive construction techniques, new bridges, new viaducts, and the two-mile-long (3.2 km) Box Tunnel. One controversial feature was the "broad gauge" of 7 ft 1⁄4 in (2,140 mm), instead of what was later to be known as "standard gauge" of 4 ft 8+1⁄2 in (1,435 mm). He astonished Britain by proposing to extend the GWR westward to North America by building steam-powered, iron-hulled ships. He designed and built three ships that revolutionised naval engineering: the SS Great Western (1838), the SS Great Britain (1843), and the SS Great Eastern (1859).

In 2002, Brunel was placed second in a BBC public poll to determine the "100 Greatest Britons". In 2006, the bicentenary of his birth, a major programme of events celebrated his life and work under the name Brunel 200

Trying out more slow shutter speed..

Woohoo, this shot has more wordplay than Scrabble. I thought the closeup image of one of the main stabiliser beams of the Goodwill Bridge symbolising power and strength, against the SS Forceful was interesting. SS Forceful is a veteran steam tug and is part of the Brisbane Maritime Museum's exhibits next to the bridge. The shot actually has bonus points for the group "Bridges and Tunnels" theme because it has 2 bridges in it, the Forceful bridge and the Goodwill Bridge.
