A new bridge across the River Dee was needed for the Chester and Holyhead Railway, a project planned in the 1840s for the expanding British railway system. It was built using cast iron girders, each of which was made of three very large castings dovetailed together. Each girder was strengthened by wrought iron bars along the length. It was finished in September 1846, and opened for local traffic after approval by the first Railway Inspector, General Charles Pasley. However, on 24 May 1847, a local train to Ruabon fell through the bridge. The accident resulted in five deaths (three passengers, the train guard, and the locomotive fireman) and nine serious injuries.[1]
The bridge had been designed by Robert Stephenson, and he was accused of negligence by a local inquest. Although strong in compression, cast iron was known to be brittle in tension or bending, yet on the day of the accident the bridge deck was covered with track ballast to prevent the oak beams supporting the track from catching fire. Ironically, Stephenson took this precaution because of a recent fire on the Great Western Railway at Uxbridge, London, where Isambard Kingdom Brunel's bridge caught fire and collapsed.
This is that bridge

Police kicking people off the top of the Seven Corners parking ramp... And being complete dicks about it. "You're not allowed to be here! No photos! Anyone taking photos will have their cameras confiscated, and you'll have to talk to the FBI!" Seriously... One of them actually said that. I wish I had our new camcorder out. This would've been great YouTube fodder.
Crowds gathered along the bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis Thursday to view the remains of the 35W bridge.
It was a beautiful day here in Minneapolis. It started with a corn pancake breakfast with Mom, Grandma, Judy & Sara and then I spent much ot the day driving around the city running errands . This afternoon I went up to PeeWee's home on the 30th floor looking over the Mississippi. It was a birds eye view of the bridge collapse in Minneapolis. Such sadness during such a beautiful day. I thought a lot today about how many times I've driven over this bridge... probably thousands of times. PW & I met up with Jay at Annie's Parlor for dinner on the deck. It's strange to be in Minneapolis during this time, but am glad to be here too.

Thoughts go out to all those in the Twin Cities and those affected by Wednesday's tragedy on I-35W.
Got a few photos down at the Mississippi this morning but this is all I have time to post for now (I know they were just shading their eyes but it appeared a salute to me). Access was of course limited and others who were in the area yesterday got much better photos than I.

Traveling southbound on I-35W in Minneapolis, where traffic is forced to take the 4th St SE/University Ave exit. Obviously this is because the bridge over the Mississippi River collapsed in early August.

The river, already low, was lowered more by the Corps of Engineers to aid in the recovery. Normally this falls area above I35 is a torrent.
The smoke is from the burning semi-tractor. The top of the school bus can be seen just under the firetruck ladder. Shortly after this photo was taken, there was an explosion near or on the already burning fire, making the situation even worse.
Interstate 35W bridge. I heard about it and flew like the wind on my bicycle, as I thought I could offer assistance.
