First light at the Ness Bridge in Inverness on 26th April 2013 witnesses Ian Riley's Black 5 No. 45407 heading across the new railway bridge which carries the line to Dingwall. The train is The Railway Touring Company's 'Great Britain VI' charter, 1Z34 0630 Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh, which will operate via Dingwall and Achnasheen. This bridge dates from April 1990 and replaced the original 1861-built structure which collapsed, after a spell of particularly heavy rain, on 8th February 1989. View On Black. This rail viaduct almost collapsed under a freight train in October 2003 when 12 cement wagons derailed and went through the bridge deck into the River Suir. Fortunately, nobody was injured and it has since been rebuilt. The viaduct is on the Limerick-Waterford railway line just upstream of Cahir in Co. Tipperary .
A gentle breeze was blowing towards the bridge causing the underside of many of the leaves to reflect the afternoon sunlight - I think this gives more life to the scene. See another view here.

The old bridge was damaged by the flash food of 2011. Each stone was numbered in preparation for a controlled dismantling and planned reconstruction.
However, it collapsed during the night while we were there. All the numbered blocks were carefully collected as part of the clearing up. Only a few numbered stones remain uncollected.

'Police said a car spun out of control along a winding section of Interstate 75 and caused the tanker to crash about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
The drivers of the car, the tanker and a third tractor-trailer in the crash escaped with only minor injuries, said Hazel Park Fire Chief Ray DeWalt. He said all were treated at hospitals and released.
"A vehicle lost control and caused the tanker to lose control, causing it to flip," DeWalt said. He said that caused a Meijer Inc. tractor-trailer carrying produce to crash as well.'

Rescuers search the Mississippi River for victims after the collapse of the 35W bridge in Minneapolis.
I was on my way home just after the 35W bridge collapsed today. The area around 4th street and University was a mob scene. The streets were filled with people, bikers, police, fire trucks, ambulances and other rescue vehicles.
I stopped along the river on my scooter to take a few pictures and soon realized it was best that I get out of there because I was just making the problem worse. Too many people were running toward the scene. Some people were crying but most people just seemed to want a glimpse of the scene. Unfortunately, it seemed like an excuse for many college kids to bust out the beers and have a good time. I was really shocked by how many people thought this was just entertainment. After one lady I saw tried to cross a police line to get a better look, an officer yelled at her and she walked away saying " I can see more on TV anyway". Another man tried to get through the barricade with his car and was stopped by a cop on foot. A guy standing next to me yelled " Run him over". Unbelievable.
I'm sure that there were plenty of heroic and selfless acts but the behavior I saw was just depressing.

Leah R. Fulin, 16, of Minneapolis, describes what she saw as the I-35W bridge collapsed just seconds after her car passed over it. “Most of the cars that were on the bridge went into the river,” she said. “There was a whole bunch of smoke when concrete breaks like that. There were people screaming.”
