162 years ago today, just five years after it was opened, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge suffered considerable damage following what the Daily Intelligencer reported as a "terrific storm."

A first-hand account of the bridge destruction reported, "About 3 o'clock we walked up towards the Suspension Bridge, and went upon it, intending to take a walk across it for pleasure, as we have frequently done, enjoying the cool breeze and the undulating motion of the bridge. . .we had never before seen the bridge effected [sic] by even to this extent by gales, and as it began to sway violently we thought it prudent to retrace our steps. . .For a few moments we watched it with breathless anxiety, lunging like a ship in the storm; at one time it rose to nearly the heighth of the towers then fell, and twisted and writhed, and was dashed almost bottom upward."

We know the word 'terrific' today by the more common informal definition meaning "good" or "fantastic." More traditional formal definitions list terrific, from the Latin root terrere, as meaning a) of great size, amount, or intensity, or b) causing terror. We can only imagine those bystanders to the Suspension Bridge destruction, out for a 'leisurely' walk on May 17, 1854, had no idea they would become witnesses of an incredibly formal "terrific storm."

An article from the Beckley Evening Post on October 16, 1924 reported the following:

"WHEELING BRIDGE FALLS; ONE KILLED

Wheeling, W. Va., Oct. 15 — Just after a crowded street car had passed, a section of the steel bridge over the Ohio river here connecting the city proper and its suburban island section collasped yesterday with a crash that was heard for blocks. Albert Coulter, of Moundsville W. Va., one of the thirty-five men employed in repairing the structure, was dropped fifty feet to his death."

An article from The Motorman and Conductor,, October 1924, Vol. 32, No. 11, published in Detroit, Michigan reads:

"FATAL BRIDGE COLLAPSE

Wheeling, W. Va.—The Wheeling Traction Co. suffered a great loss on October 15, as a result of a portion of the south sidewalk of the steel bridge and the death of A.M. Coulter, a workman on the bridge and employee of the Company. Thirty-four other workers on the bridge at the time narrowly escaped the same fate. Brother Harry Cline, operating a one-man car crossed over the bridge about one minute before the collapse. The collapse was due, according to the coroner of Ohio county, to the piling of a tremendous weight of timber in excess of the bridge's capacity at that point.

"The collapse of the bridge has caused considerable inconvenience to the patrons because of transferring to buses which crossed the river on the suspension bridge for the rest of the week. by the time the company had the steel bridge in fair shape by propping so that the cars could run over with caution, and at the present writing, the bridge is in good condition and all traffic is going over with safety."

The first Sunshine Skyway Bridge spanning 15 miles of Tampa Bay, was completed in 1954. The second twin bridge was completed in 1971. On May 9, 1980 a ship collided with the bridge, and 35 people plunged to their deaths.

In 1987, a new cable-stayed bridge replaced the "old" Sunshine Skyway bridges. The two older bridges were removed, except for the approach ramps which now serve as fishing piers.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge, spanning Florida's Tampa Bay, is the world's longest bridge with a cable-stayed main span, with a length of 29,040 feet (exactly 5.5 miles or approximately 8.85 km). It is part of I-275 (SR 93) and US 19 (SR 55), connecting St. Petersburg in Pinellas County and Terra Ceia in Manatee County, Florida, passing through Hillsborough County waters. Construction of the current bridge began in 1982, and the completed bridge was dedicated on February 7, 1987. The new bridge cost $244 million to build, and was opened to traffic on April 20, 1987. Crystal Brook rail bridge in 1975 after a derailment on the 24th Oct 1975. It collapsed about 19:00 as a Goods Train passed over it, after flood water had undermined the middle support. It could been a lot worse to, as the IP had been over it about 15:30 The first Loco made it over the bridge only just, but with a broken coupler. The 2nd loco ended up upside down & the 3rd derailed but still upright. While the new bridge was built they used the old narrow line bridge, that still standing today

The collapsed Interstate 35W Bridge is visable in the upper portion of this blurred photo. Shortly after the camera took this shot I was ordered by the police to take my kite and camera down in case a helicopter wanted to land at the Command Center.

Taken by a friend of mine, who'd just driven it not 20 minutes before the collapse. He is on site now setting up a free wifi network for the rescue workers.

Tanker Truck Fire and Bridge Collapse (I-75 at 9 Mi Rd) Hazel Park, Michigan

Last night's accident:

- Gallons of fuel in tanker: 13000

- Temperature of flames: 2500°

- Only minor injuries were reported!

- I-75 is the main freeway to Detroit (now closed) :-(

0.5 miles from my friend Mike’s house.

'Police said a car spun out of control along a winding section of Interstate 75 and caused the tanker to crash about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

The drivers of the car, the tanker and a third tractor-trailer in the crash escaped with only minor injuries, said Hazel Park Fire Chief Ray DeWalt. He said all were treated at hospitals and released.

"A vehicle lost control and caused the tanker to lose control, causing it to flip," DeWalt said. He said that caused a Meijer Inc. tractor-trailer carrying produce to crash as well.'

First light at the Ness Bridge in Inverness on 26th April 2013 witnesses Ian Riley's Black 5 No. 45407 heading across the new railway bridge which carries the line to Dingwall. The train is The Railway Touring Company's 'Great Britain VI' charter, 1Z34 0630 Inverness - Kyle of Lochalsh, which will operate via Dingwall and Achnasheen. This bridge dates from April 1990 and replaced the original 1861-built structure which collapsed, after a spell of particularly heavy rain, on 8th February 1989. Fortunately no train was passing across it at the time. Copyright John Whitehouse - all rights reserved
