Demolition of Lyme Pit's headgears and associated winding houses, weigh-bridges, stores, offices, canteen and washing facilities, plus the 180ft-high circular chimney stack, was undertaken by North East Demolition Ltd over a 15-month period commencing 10 July 1966. A colour photograph of the scene on 6 May 1967 is included in Dennis Sweeney's “St Helens & Wigan Junction Railway” (Triangle, 2014).

A brick works had been established nearby when sinking of the Lyme Pits began in the 1870s. Clearly, though, these bricks are not of local manufacture. A note on the Rock Brick Co at Buckley accompanies this photograph.

The new entrance includes a large brick pillar, which is currently being carved with images and text about the area by artist Gary Breeze. Gary and his colleague Charlotte Howarth held 2 workshops in early summer to enable local people to input into the design for the pillar. One workshop was for local school children from Angel Road Middle School; the other was for the general local community and was held at St Augustine’s Church hall.

The final design for the pillar is on a jousting theme, to reflect the Gildencroft’s heritage. The carving work should be complete by the end of October.
