The Mermaid
The wind had dropped, the sails had sagged on the mast; in the night just lit by the new moon the ship was rocking slightly on the black mirror of the water, when the siren sang.
The sailors seemed to hear a rustling sound like a light breeze; then like music rising from the deep sea; then like a very sweet voice, never heard before; and finally the song drew them one by one into a sleep without awakening.
In fact, when the sailors were asleep, the Mermaid climbed onto the ship, touched them one after the other with her deadly hand, and all of them, without realizing it, passed, dreaming, from sleep to death.

Il vento era caduto, le vele si erano afflosciate sull'albero; nella notte appena rischiarata dalla nuova luna la nave dondolava leggermente sullo specchio nero dell'acqua, quando la sirena cantò.

Au pied de la Citadelle, dominé par le clocher de l’église saint Jean-Baptiste, il reflète sur son plan d’eau les vieux immeubles de style toscan qui s’ordonnent en q autour de l’anse.
Derrière son môle génois du XVie siècle, le Vieux-port de Bastia a conservé toute l’authenticité de son charme méditerranéen. Le long des quais, les maisons aux façades colorées polies par le vent du large se serrent les unes contre les autres, surplombant les terrasses des restaurants et des cafés.

Behind its 16th century Genoese jetty, the Old Port of Bastia has retained all the authenticity of its Mediterranean charm. Along the quays, houses with colorful facades polished by the sea breeze huddle together, overlooking the terraces of restaurants and cafes.
🇬🇧 On a bright Sunday morning in Fregene, I wanted to capture a moment of pure lightness. The lace dress, the sun, the sea breeze — everything came together in a natural, almost playful elegance. Sometimes the beach doesn’t need swimsuits, but just the right mood (and maybe the right spin).

Il Pontile Bellavista Vittoria di Lido di Camaiore, in Versilia, è un'elegante passerella pedonale che si protende per circa 258 metri sul Mar Tirreno. Distrutto durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale e ricostruito nel dopoguerra, oggi è un simbolo della città e un luogo d'incontro. La sua architettura moderna offre una vista panoramica spettacolare che spazia dal mare, con i suoi suggestivi tramonti, fino alle imponenti Alpi Apuane. All'estremità, una piattaforma ospita un bar-ristorante, perfetto per un aperitivo in riva al mare. È una meta ideale per passeggiare e ammirare il paesaggio in ogni stagione, godendo della brezza marina.
The Bellavista Vittoria Pier in Lido di Camaiore, Versilia, is an elegant pedestrian walkway extending about 258 meters over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in the post-war period, it is now a symbol of the town and a meeting place. Its modern architecture offers a spectacular panoramic view, from the sea with its stunning sunsets to the imposing Apuan Alps. At the end, a platform houses a bar-restaurant, perfect for an aperitif by the sea. It is an ideal destination for a stroll and to admire the landscape in any season while enjoying the sea breeze.

5. The Changing Face of the Morteratsch Glacier

Nel pomeriggio, il sole invernale illumina il ghiacciaio del Morteratsch. Tra le masse di neve fresca emergono seracchi azzurri, torri di ghiaccio compresso, formatesi a causa di tensioni e fratture all’interno del corpo glaciale. Una gelida brezza solleva fiocchi di neve sulla superficie.
Con una lunghezza di circa 6 chilometri, il ghiacciaio si estende dagli alti campi di ghiaccio attorno al Piz Bernina (4049 m) fino alla valle, a circa 2100 metri di altitudine. Lungo il percorso riceve acqua da ghiacciai minori, tra cui il ghiacciaio del Pers. Insieme danno origine all’Ova da Morteratsch, un torrente che, attraverso l’Inn, raggiunge infine il Mar Nero. Un raro esempio di fiume alpino che scorre verso est.
Il ghiacciaio del Morteratsch non è solo spettacolare da osservare, ma rende anche visibili gli effetti del cambiamento climatico. In alcuni anni, si ritira fino a 40 metri. Lungo il sentiero glaciale sono segnati i livelli raggiunti in anni precedenti. Allo stesso tempo, il luogo è teatro di esperimenti promettenti. Qui i ricercatori testano metodi innovativi per rallentare temporaneamente lo scioglimento, come teli riflettenti e neve artificiale.

Am Nachmittag fällt das Licht der Wintersonne auf den Morteratschgletscher. Zwischen den frischen Schneemassen ragen blaue Seracs empor, Türme aus komprimiertem Eis, entstanden durch Spannungen und Brüche im Gletschereis. Ein eisiger Wind fegt über die Oberfläche und wirbelt feinen Schnee auf.
Mit einer Länge von rund 6 Kilometern erstreckt sich der Gletscher von den hohen Eisfeldern rund um den Piz Bernina (4049 m) bis ins Tal auf etwa 2100 Meter Höhe. Unterwegs wird er unter anderem vom Persgletscher gespeist. Gemeinsam bilden sie die Quelle der Ova da Morteratsch, eines Bachs, der über den Inn schliesslich ins Schwarze Meer fliesst. Ein seltenes Beispiel für einen Alpenfluss, der ostwärts verläuft.
Der Morteratschgletscher ist nicht nur eindrucksvoll anzusehen, sondern zeigt auch deutlich die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels. In manchen Jahren zieht er sich um bis zu 40 Meter zurück. Entlang des Gletscherpfads sind frühere Positionen markiert. Gleichzeitig ist der Ort ein Schauplatz hoffnungsvoller Experimente. Forschende testen hier innovative Methoden, um das Abschmelzen vorübergehend zu verlangsamen, etwa durch reflektierende Decken oder künstlichen Schnee.

In the afternoon, the winter sun casts its light over the Morteratsch Glacier. Amid the fresh snow masses, blue seracs rise up, towers of compressed ice formed by stress and fractures within the glacier body. A biting wind sweeps across the surface, stirring up fine snow.
Stretching approximately 6 kilometers, the glacier descends from the high icefields around Piz Bernina (4049 m) down to the valley at about 2100 meters. Along the way, it is fed by tributaries such as the Pers Glacier. Together, they form the source of the Ova da Morteratsch, a stream that flows via the Inn River to the Black Sea, a rare example of an Alpine river flowing eastward.
The Morteratsch Glacier is not only visually striking but also a clear indicator of climate change. In some years, it retreats by as much as 40 meters. Along the glacier path, markers show its extent in previous years. At the same time, it is a site of hopeful experimentation. Researchers are testing innovative ways to temporarily slow melting, including reflective blankets and artificial snow.

Facilmente raggiungibile da Rethymnon sul Mare Egeo per mezzo di una strada che attraversa l'impressionante canyon di Kotsìfou, Plakiàs è un bel luogo per le vacanze sul Mar Libico dell'Isola di Creta.
Fino a qualche tempo fa Plakiàs era un villaggio di pescatori formato da poche case ed un piccolo molo; il crescente turismo dell'isola la ha trasformata in un luogo di vacanze ubicato sul caldo Mar Libico mosso da una perenne brezza che soffia nella baia davanti alla spiaggia urbana del lungomare, lunga 1,5 Km.
Altre spiagge sono la spiaggia di Peligremnos - ad oriente - sabbiosa e con una falesia a pareti verticali che la sovrasta; ad ovest c'è la spiaggia di Skinos, di ciottoli e sabbia. Da visitare anche la spiaggia che va verso Capo Mouri, bella spiaggia organizzata con acque verdi in cui si può nuotare.
Easily reachable from Rethymnon on the Aegean Sea by a road that crosses the impressive Kotsìfou canyon, Plakiàs is a beautiful place for holidays on the Libyan Sea of the Island of Crete.
Until recently Plakiàs was a fishing village consisting of a few houses and a small pier; the growing tourism of the island has transformed it into a place of vacation located on the hot Libyan Sea moved by a perennial breeze that blows in the bay of the urban beach in the seafront, 1.5 km long.
Other beaches are the Peligremnos beach - to the east - sandy and with a cliff with vertical walls that overhangs it; to the west is Skinos beach, with pebbles and sand. To visit also the beach that goes towards Cape Mouri, a beautiful organized beach with green waters in which is possible to swim.
