My husband's family is Jewish and his sister invited us to celebrate Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) at her house last night. She cooked a delicious meal, and our contribution to the feast was Apple-Honey Challah. I make the dough in the bread machine and then form and braid the loaf and bake it in the oven. The hardest part is rolling the apple filling into the three pieces of the braid. None of the filling leaked out, and the bread baked perfectly. This is probably my best effort ever!

Using my mother's recipe which is listed in the cookbook behind the loaves.

Two loafs of white bread,

cooling on the rack.

While everyone was still in bed this morning, I got up and made a "semi-traditional" Scandinavian julekake/julekage, or Christmas bread.

The smell of the bread cooking, with the cinnamon, cardamom, coriander and nutmeg was terrific and it tasted great with dried cranberries, cherries, golden raisins and slivered almonds inside (also threw in some chopped walnuts and a handful of chocolate chips - just because, well, because I wanted to....)

Thank heavens not everyone hates gluten. I'm sad for those who have health issues but I love bread in all its variety. These loaves were all beautiful at the farmer's market but I bought one a little further to the right, out of the picture.

"Miner's Sourdough" with just 4 ingredients: wheat flour, sourdough starter, water and salt. It's amazing when toasted and dripping with butter.

i can tell the holidays are getting close when persimmons show up in my bi-weekly veg box — and i always make them into this amazing persimmon bread (recipe by David Lebovitz, adapted from James Beard)

(and now the house smells SO good)

Bread is a staple food prepared from a dough of flour and water, usually by baking. Throughout recorded history it has been popular around the world and is one of the oldest artificial foods, having been of importance since the dawn of agriculture.

Peppered bacon bread from Zingerman's. Verdict? YUM freakin' YUM. The texture inside was amazing, and the crust super crispy and divine. Hard to believe that such fresh-tasting and amazing bread was baked in Ann Arbor, MI.

Bread by husband, photo by me...eating by both parties! :)

My husband and I used to go to Pescadero, which is south of Half Moon Bay (usually on our way to Pigeon Point), for the Garlic-artichoke bread at Archangeli's Grocery Store. The trick was to arrive when they put out the fresh, still warm bread....

So...what to do about my craving? The store does ship bread, but I felt that was a little pricey. Going there on a moment's notice...also a bit pricey. So I decided to bake my own.

This is my second attempt...the first was pretty good, but the second was even better. And I have ideas for the next batch...

Handmade Bread, just out of the oven and ready for dinner.

dumpster diving is ♥

we went back 30 minutes after the store was closed. so easy, they were thrown in a compost bin, and there was plastic biodegradable bags under so they were all clean and nice and fresh!
