Thirteen professional boxing bouts and the debut of four of Wales’ top talents had set the scene for Saturday 23rd July at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre. Sanigar Events had once again put on a stacked bill of bouts with a number of Wales’ best prospects and biggest names right now.

We had Swansea boys Sonny Lee and Kristian Touze make their professional debut, along with Treharris’s Gavin Gwynne.

Boxing Media UK sat and witnessed some fine performances and some even finer wins.

Buckle up tight as the ‘Merthyr Mayhem’ was set to unfold on a warm night in the South of Wales

Charity Boxing Night at Colne Municipal Hall, 25th October 2013

Panamanean boxing legend Roberto Duran (pictured in black shirt and cap) visited Bristol for the first time in 12 years and attended a dinner where he answered questions put to him by the audience. The dinner was MC'd by former WBC champ Glenn Catley (in light grey suit) and notable guests included Dennis Stinchcombe MBE. Bristol boxer Danny Butler (beard) was also present promoting his upcoming title fight on October 11th in Whitchurch, Bristol.

When asked if he had ever been lucky winning any fights, Spanish speaker Duran (speaking through his daughter, his interpreter) said no, his wins were not down to luck but to using his skill as a boxer and his intelligence. If he were lucky, he said, he would have won the bingo!

He was also asked if he had the same passion as he once had for boxing to which he replied, no, he was rarely passionate about boxing nowadays. Few modern fighters interested him and there was too much money and not enough skill in the sport.

RAFAEL TREJO BOXING GYM

PERSONAL NOTE: CAN ANYONE HELP ME IDENTIFY THIS INCREDIBLE COACH OF PROMISING BOXERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD? I KNOW HE WAS AN OLYMPIAN SEVERAL TIMES. ANY INFORMATION ON HIS BACKGROUND WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! I WANT TO GIVE HIM CREDIT.

“Nestled within one of Old Havana’s crumbling neighborhoods, off the traditional turistas stroll, lies the “Rafael Trejo” Gimnasio al Aire Libre, an open air training facility for local boxing enthusiasts as well as the occasional foreign boxing junkets. Named after a revolutionary hero who was shot in 1936. The Rafael Trejo boxing gym is for young and not-so-young pugilists to learn and train for their country’s second favorite sport (surpassed only by Cuba’s well documented passion for baseball). The Rafael Trejo gym is certainly not easy to find. Not only is it one of Havana’s best kept secrets, it is also difficult to locate even by the most seasoned taxi driver. Gimnasio de Boxeo Rafael Trejo is located at Calle Cuba 815, Habana Vieja where a small government sign identifies the spot. When closed the club is sealed up tight behind a nondescript white brick wall with only the ticket booth

window hinting what potential excitement lies within.

However, a knock on the wooden entrance door will

usually yield an answer from the administrator who can inform you when to come back to watch the

athletes train or compete. The best time seems to be

usually on Saturdays when the young champions to be are not in school. Inside snuggled between two three-story apartment buildings

you’ll discover an open area with a single well-worn

boxing ring in the middle of the courtyard. On the two

opposite sides of the enclave lay bleachers for

the spectators to sit and cheer. Down below young boxers wearing protective head gear and kidney belts fight with intensity as they try to earn valuable points to ascend the standings so that they may compete on a national level. Each sanctioned fight is refereed and timed professionally by dedicated officials.” February 20, 2012 by AJ Twist
