Inside the vault. FYI, noise/grain was added for effect, since ISO 3200 at this resolution looks relatively noise-free with the 1D X.

I call this my “Oak” Glasses Box. On the top of the box is a variation of a “Rolling Star” quilt pattern. The glasses box is about 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" and 2 1/4" high on the outside. Inside it is 2 3/8" x 5 3/8" x 1 1/2". I made it using 116 pieces of wood cut in either diamond or triangle shapes from different kinds of wood. The box is finished in its natural color with 5 or 6 coats of a clear wiping varnish, rubbed in by hand. The pieces are a bit over 3/16" thick, glued onto a Baltic Birch base, so they hold up much better than a thin veneer.
The type of wood is listed on the bottom of the box from the center out. On this box the wood is “Walnut” and “Oak” from Missouri and “Brazilwood” from Brazil.
On the bottom I signed it, listed the wood, and dated it. After the date, the words “Foot Cut” let you know I made it on a foot powered table saw.
I lined the box with black velveteen.

Each year, Gallery Route One in Point Reyes invites over a hundred artists to create unique works of art using a wooden box.
Here are the inspiring artworks they created this year: they range in style from whimsical to poignant and thought-provoking. These photos were taken on closing day, when the gallery organized a live auction for each of this year’s 150 boxes. The proceeds support the gallery’s exhibits and community programs.
Two of the boxes were created by members of our art community: Howard Rheingold (a.k.a. Dr. Rindbrain) contributed an illuminated box called ‘Magical’, while Geo Monley and Meryl Rubenstein made ‘Les Puzzles.’
Members of ‘Pataphysical Studios came to cheer for their peers -- Dr. Really was the highest bidder for Dr. Rindbrain’s piece, which was thus kept in the family. After the show, we all went to Stellina to celebrate over a nice dinner.

Storage boxes that my daughter and I created using very inexpensive plastic containers, some fabric, a little thought, and some ribbon! :) They work great and look even better!
Here's a mostly unused box of chalk I found in one of my father's countless toolboxes. I'm sure the chalk was used for marking purposes as well as for impromptu games of lunchtime hopscotch with whichever fellas was workin' that particular job site.
The back of the box reads "Regent Blackboard Chalk — Non-Toxic — Made in U.S.A. by United Crayon Co., Inc., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11217 — Copyright 1947 By United Crayon Co., Inc."
"Now just wait a second," I hear you say. "You're telling us this box of chalk is from 1947 and yet it's got a 5-digit zip code, which were introduced in 1963 — what gives?"
Well, clearly it's an artifact from some alternate timeline where zip codes were launched earlier.
Or maybe it's merely from the 1960s, and they still carried the old copyright date on the package.

I've been a bit constrained by work -- but I will try to find some time to visit & comment tonight. I miss you guys!
While attempting some 'product photography', feeling out the light, this snapshot sort of happend.
Playing around with it on the computer, I like how the washed out colors of the pots (I did not stage, I had them there on the desk to begin with) found a new way of working together, somehow.
And they complement the silver box nicely I think; packaging was pretty neat and stylish back in the old days. 😋

Building boxes and frames for the 2025 bee season. Spring, as announced by the blooming of the Maple trees has arrived here in Florida. The bee population is increasing and with lots of brood and the presence of drones in the colonies, we're at the beginning of swarm season. The catch boxes were baited and set out last weekend and looking back through my records, for the past six years I see that the first swarms have occurred during the last week of February.
