Glove box at the Battery Materials Research program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The glove box allows researchers to safely assemble batteries made of reactive materials such as lithium in an inert environment.

Small box made from a 4x4, made by the photographer. (He's a better photographer than woodworker...) Taken in Albany, CA by a Nikon N75 with a Nikkor 28-80 kit lens on Fuji Superia 800. Exposure unrecorded: Nikon Speedlight SB-50DX used. Negative scanned into computer by an HP G4010, dust removal and gamma correction done in Paint Shop Pro Photo X2.

Method: Rip about ¼ inch of material off opposite sides of the 4x4, keeping off-cuts - these will be your top and bottom. (and keep track of which one is which!) Cut out center of box with a band saw, keeping off-cut. Glue bottom of box onto center. Rip ¼ inch off the top of the center off-cut, glue to top, making sure that top is centered both ways on box. I make the center slightly excentric so the top will only fit one way. Finish with one coat of orange shellac.

Done correctly, these make good "stash boxes": they'll look like a solid 4x4!

I think I'm up to about 35+ skeins for the craft show.

This box looks like a cigarette box and can be folded from any rectangle. The left model is slightly open.

Historic bathing boxes are dotted along the Mornington Peninsula, and are worth a fortune, despite typically having no power or water.

Coraline Gift Box Reveal (Part 1 / Teaser)

Here's a quick teaser-peek into the hand-made "Gift Box" I'd receive from the animation team behind CORALINE The Movie [tagged] directed by Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas / James & The Giant Peach) based on a fairytale by Neil Gaiman.

Numbered 23 out of 50 existing boxes worldwide - this perhaps may be personally one of the more treasured and honored "gift" I've received thus far in 2008. Simple "Thank Yous" may not be good enough, I'm afraid. Will strive to process and upload full reveal pics before the year ends (and share my "manly joy" ... heh) ... Meanwhile, higher-res versions of this video can be found via my Flickr / Multiply / Vimeo / Facebook.

CORALINE: Official Movie Website (password: "BUTTONEYES"). Coraline premieres February 6th, 2009.

New, smaller boxes. My 3rd gen came in a cube... oh well. Easier to store.

I really enjoyed making all of those boxes blocks in the scrappy solids and in black & white, so I want to try them in prints now. I'll start with red, orange, yellow and purple and then see if I want any other colors.

Ever since I got a new coffeemaker, the box has gotten even more use than the machine that came in it - and that's saying something!

I really enjoyed using the one inch strips in the blocks for the last quilt, so I want to make more of those blocks in solids, no black and lots of white. Whenever I'm in a mood to use one inch strips, I go with that mood! I pulled the different sizes of strips to make those blocks and then started sorting them into like colors. Since these have been cut at different times from my stash of solids, the same fabric is often mixed throughout the piles. So many slightly different shades in these! Good thing I like sorting :)
