Peeking under my hoverfly lagoons I can see quite a few of these and there will be far more that have crawled away from the lagoon to pupate rather than pupate under it. I have about 35 hoverfly lagoons in shady places around the house. I think I can see some larvae in some of them that must have over wintered as larvae rather than pupae - so maybe more pupae to come soon. The place will, I hope, be buzzing with drone flies late Spring and Summer!

Years ago, the water level in Lake Hodges was dropped in order to do maintenance on the dam. With the water level low, trees grew on the lake bottom. Maintenance was done and the lake filled drowning the trees. The water level has dropped once again exposing the lake bottom, old tree stumps, and a few odds and ends.

Case Park overlooking the West Bottoms area of Kansas City. In my opinion this is one of the premier spots to take in a sunset. There are views of the Missouri River to the right (not seen here) and of Kansas City, KS. The area below once was used for livestock back in the 1940's.
In its heyday only the stockyard in Chicage was bigger than this one. Everything dropped off dramatically after the Great Flood of 1951 which devastated the stockyards and associated businesses and slaughterhouses. After the flood, the stockyards never recovered.

Hovering above the Brandsgil valley, you can really see the brilliant colours in the volcanic rock. Bright reds and yellows contrast with the patches of green vegetation.

My Bottom End

A fun selfie near the end of the evening. The letters END and my end. Swell. :D If you feel that places like Wonder Valley feel like the edge of civilization, then this is for you. These enormous letters created by Jack Pierson acknowledge just that. I ran out to take night photos of this art installation curated by High Desert Test Sites. This art is of course entitled "The End of the World". HDTS is a non-profit organization that supports immersive experiences and exchanges. I illuminated the scene with a handheld light, holding it in front of me during the exposure.

This is something that we seldom see in 2020. Almost never, in fact. Gwen had just received a letter from a friend; she tore open the envelope and read parts of it to me aloud. A letter used to be an actual thing, exciting to receive, especially from a loved one or someone who wrote well. Now we have email, and what we gain in immediacy is balanced by the loss of character, individuality. Efficient, yes. Meaningful? I'm not so sure.
Her bell bottoms and beads - and the letter - place this image firmly in the hippie era. The negative, never printed, lay forgotten in my back files for almost 50 years.

Thanks for all of the kind comments and likes. I haven't been able to play with my camera for several weeks, so this was fun!
I'd never heard of Rip Curl before this photo. Now I'll never forget it.

My Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight, SQ 38, crossed the California coast roughly over Carmel/Pebble Beach, a bit south of Monterey.
The City of Monterey is at bottom right part of Monterey Bay. You can spot the Monterey Regional Airport at lower right. The City of Santa Cruz is at top left. ( If you are viewing this on a Laptop/PC, some landmarks have been identified on the image itself. )
