Prof. Dr. Heinz Haenel is project director of the business unit Diabetes for sanofi-aventis in Hoechst near Frankfurt, Germany; close to where I live.

In addition to his primary work in Diabetes research he is involved in developing a cure against the sleeping sickness (human african trypanosomiasis). This disease basically only affects people in Sub-Saharan africa, and it is estimated that 50000 to 70000 people are currently infected.

His research is cofounded by the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative and the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation.

This Strobist assignment coincided with a planned visit to his working place, so I dared to ask him if he would allow me to take some pictures of him. He did, and I was lucky to be able to shoot some pictures of him in the famous Peter Behrens Building on campus, an expressionist building with very interesting architecture and a distinct style. Unfortunately the lecture room was closed (I originally planned to shoot the assignment with him standing in the seat rows of the lecture hall).

However, most of the building is made from colorful brickstone. In addition the building has an atrium which can be seen from the galleries. That's beyond cool, and it's almost impossible to get a bad background in this building.

Strobist info:

Shot with a Nikon D300 with Sigma 50-150 2.8 at 1/60, @f/5, ISO 400 (cloudy white balance) to get a decent background from the brickwork (2 stops underexposed).

On-axis fill (and Nikon CLS master trigger for key): bare SB800 on TTL, corded to hotshoe, dialed down to -2.0 EV, held close to lens opposing the key light as in this strobist blog entry.

Key light: SB800 (Nikon CLS slave) in Lumiquest SB III set to manual @1/16 power via CLS and 1/4 CTO camera right and up.

Minuscule postprocessing in Aperture.
