Genevieve is the one with the flag held high. I was chosen because I am precisely 72 inches tall and have a very cute butt in Bellbottom dungarees.

Anybody want to hazard a guess?

(No, the tags won’t help you out in your guesses….. grin)

As it turns out the other side of the sign made it clear.

This is definitely a ‘just because’ sort of shot.

I was totally surprised by the morning exercises of this beautiful Goshawk! Camera settings OK but unprepared to capture the wings going up in the sky!

Nevertheless a nice moment to watch, capture and to share!

The first freshman bootcamp of 2023 brought students in to get a feel for campus, meet faculty, and engage in scavenger hunts, ice breakers and group projects on July 19. (Photos by Mike Glassburn/IU Kokomo)

I don't know who Barry is, but he sounds like my kind of man.

The Macro Photography Bootcamp is a series of intensive workshops designed for intermediate to advanced macro photographers. The only requirement is a feverish passion for macro photography and entomology, with a strong desire to elevate your macro shooting skills to an advanced level. This will be a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself into the rich biodiversity of insects, spiders, reptiles and amphibians of Borneo's pristine rainforests. At the same time, it will be an amazing bug-hunting experience with a group of like-minded, passionate individuals! To top it off, it is close to the end of the milky way season in the region and there should be ample opportunities for milky way photography!

For the Strobist Bootcamp, assignment 2 "Background"

It turns out (my imaginary) Pat Coolwall makes grafitti-resistant glass walls, as seen in the background.

Please let me know if you think some of the alternatives would work better. Alternatives can be found here.

This one is not very tight, but on the other hand that allows for cropping and leaves room for typography. And I like the grafitti idea on the right. Thoughts?

One hard light on stand to camera left and in front of subject, one hard light just slightly behind the subject to the (camera) right (behind steel structure/fence).

This is the fourth concept that I had for the strobist bootcamp assignment (the third idea didn't turn out so well; I won't bother to post it). This bottle was a total nightmare to light -- I only have one light, which makes glass especially difficult to light properly. This was lit with a strobe on the right behind a huge white plastic bin to spread the light out. On the left is a large sheet of white paper, propped close to the bottle so that the reflection runs the entire length of the bottle. Behind the bottle, I have a white piece of paper cut to the shape of the bottle. This reflects the light through the bottle so that the blue color shows up better.

The coins were equally difficult, since I had to drop them with one hand and trigger the camera with the other. I probably have 50 or 60 different shots that didn't turn out right at all!

Next time I am going to shoot a clear bottle -- it would be (was) so much easier...

Setup is here and my process is here.

Strobist Bootcamp assignment #4

Flash trough hanging plastic (trying to get a strip-light effect) about 45deg to the left, white sheet of paper about 45deg right, tungsten-gelled flash from below on white background.
