I found this little boot in the middle of our walk in huehuetenango's mountains. I estimated the size will fit a 7 year old...

Obra do escultor Benedito da Silva Santos, 57 anos, conhecido como Seu Ditinho Joana.
Divulgador do Quilombo, o escultor é um dos últimos personagens mais conhecedores da história contada pelos antigos, além de ser reconhecido internacionalmente pela sua arte, que já foi exportada para a Europa e Estados Unidos. Segundo ele, apesar de rico material fotográfico já explorado no local, pouco existe de registro da história dos descendentes de quilombolas da região.
"Dizem que dou vida ao que já morreu", conta, justificando trabalhar sempre com madeira de lei, principalmente jacarandá, somente encontrada derrubada na mata.
Ditinho Joana retrata em suas peças, esculpidas em um pau só, o povo antigo da região bem como suas atividades de trabalho, entre elas, os engenhos de cana-de-açúcar, os alambiques e ainda a bota, ícone da cultura caipira. "As botas, apesar de serem peças menores, são as que fazem mais sucesso. Feita meio rasgada e bem usada, ela demonstra as marcas do sofrimento do trabalhador rural."
Tive o prazer de conhecer este Senhor, em seu atelier (São Luís do Paraitinga-SP), em 2.003, numa tarde cercada de muitos "causos"....
