Today's bonus OARCB (old ass rivet counter boomer)
mundane high sun, silver box, gravel pile, leaning, /wirey, mindless wedgie!
So let's return now to those thrilling days of yesteryear and continue my never ending fetish to capture a train in a perfect NGPN (National Geographic Pristine Nature) setting.
With that in mind here's today's pick for National Vertical Week. And for today's pick Mr Peabody has set the Wayback Machine to 2:25pm on April 17, 1988 as CSX #211 exits Hickory Creek Tunnel #3 and crosses Bridge #66 south of Morley, Tenn.
After Ella's birthday party, I was on my way home when I saw a cool looking pier and a bunch of pilings extending out into Lake Washington in Kenmore. I had driven past it several times, and as it was about sunset, I decided to finally stop in. Glad I did, because it was a great place to shoot, and I plan to go back often. Here's my first offering from this place, which is called Log Boom Park. Tomorrow I'll show you why it is called Log Boom with one of my all time favorite shots.
I composed the shot like this to get the pier and also to try to get the streaking clouds to the right. I had a straight shot of the pier that I liked as well, but unfortunately it was blown out, so I tossed it. Good excuse to go back though. :)

When this big flash came down I felt the ground shake ... Powerful experience, and sheer luck that the camera was aimed right there!

US Air Force 'Wisconsin Air National Guard Boeing KC-97L Stratocruiser 52-0905 seen perfoming a 'down and dirty' pass at the International Air Tattoo, RAF Greenham Common, July 1973.
The KC-97L was the ultimate conversion of the famous 'Strat' a development of the B-29 and subsequent B-50 bombers of the 1940's.
Boeing took the B-50 Washington design and added another 'bubble' to the fuselage cross-section making it into a passenger cabin to become the Boeing B-377 Stratocruiser or C-97 when in USAF service.
Then, by adding a couple of jets to the wings they increased both the fuel-uplift and airspeed allowing them to become Air-to-Air refuellers as in this case with the 'flying' boom shown in the extended down position.
It's a good job he didn't go any lower as that would have made sparks fly!
My apologies for the poor image but this is a scanned Kodak Instamatic slide - hence how dire it is and I was also 'panning' at the time.....
