"To Infinity and Beyond!: The Story of Pixar Animation Studios", 2007. Published by Chronicle Books. Design by Tolleson.
I met up with fellow graphic designer Fred Averin last month for coffee. Since our meeting was inspired by a discussion about type usage in the context of an existing brand, I suggested we each bring a favorite piece of type to share.
Remarkably, we both brought a book by the same designer, Robert Massin. In this photo, Fred is looking at my copy of Massin's masterpiece, a graphic interpretation of Eugene Ionesco's play "The Bald Soprano." Fred brought the Massin-designed French edition of "The Bridge over the River Kwai," along with a mindblowing treatment of Genesis designed and illustrated by Adrian Frutiger, and a book by Jean-Francois Bory that I've since found (not to my surprise) is also quite a piece of work, but at the time we were so engaged by the Massin pieces that we never got to it.
A most stimulating way to spend a rainy morning. To think that if it had been fairer weather, I would have brought some hotel stationery instead!

This is a book design and execution that I created for Susan Kozel's book Closer published by the MIT press.
It was an assignment in a UCLA Design | Media Arts Class. The front portion of the book is comprised of all the text and images, clearly setup into a four row system, which aligns to the four flipbooks at the very back of the book.

"Design Benign" was my senior thesis project. I studied the role of cuteness in contemporary product design, what cuteness is exactly comprised of, and how cuteness can be beneficial to design.
Design Benign is an ongoing research project about the role of cuteness in product design. You can read excerpts from it, as well as new material, at design-benign.blogspot.com

Byoung Won Choi speaks about his Book Publishing
"It was a series of work assembling parts of consciousness, spirit, and parts of thoughts about which I felt complications as a designer, rummaging my favorite articles, sketches of ideas, designs, and portfolios. I also collected daily episodes and favorite sentences. I took off materials of different concept, and recomposed old designs. I screened these contents filtering through 'Green', and illuminated life and design...

Promo poster I designed for the upcoming debut novel by Erin Morgenstern THE NIGHT CIRCUS.
Our bookstore set up a theme display based around the book release and we needed a sign.
This is heavily inspired by the cover art of the Advance Reader's Copy the publisher sent out. The final cover is different, but I feel that the book has so many images to choose from, that any attempt at literally-interpreting the contents would fall short.
That said, it's an amazing and vibrant book; hugely imaginative and addictive. Look for it at your indie bookstores: www.indiebound.org

Luberon is and area of Provence in southern France characterized by a series of strikingly picturesque hill-top villages that date back 1,000 years or more. This region has recently become more well-known because of the 2006 film, A Good Year, directed by Ridley Scott. We had the pleasure of designing this beautiful 10 x 8 soft cover book for our client, the French photographer Marco Sgarbi. The first in a two-volume set that would showcase his style and range as a photographer.

The spine has a less expressive version of this maverick character (‘Leipziger Form’, more or less). The typographic title inside the book exhibits the conventional double S, of course.
