We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

Tahmima Anam's debut novel "A Golden Age" is an interesting read about a widow (Rehana Haque), her children (Sohail and Maya), and the war for independence in Bangladesh. A story of the 1971 revolution in East Pakistan that resulted in creation of the independent nation of Bangladesh.
The struggle for Bangladesh's independence is told mainly from the viewpoint of Rehana Haque, who mourns her husband and takes heroic risks in order to protect her two children, even when they are taken away from her. When she re-unites with daughter Maya and son Sohail, she vows never to let the family be torn apart. However, East Pakistan/Bangladeshi free elections get overturned on the day that Rehana throws a party to celebrate the anniversary of her family's reunion. Things changed, and Rehana's son and daughter become increasingly involved in the resistance, and Rehana cannot resist helping them. But her life changes when she agrees to shelter the wounded Major, a surly giant of a man who led the rebels in her house. It also is a novel about taking risks for noble causes, romance during impossible times, and the growing pains of both children and countries.
Tahmima Anam has a very engaging writing style. The pace of the story is slow, but it is so compelling that it is difficult to put down, so I ended up finishing in 3 days ;)

Kabul Beauty School penned by Deborah Rodriguez aka Miss Debbie in Kabul. A hairdresser from Holland Michigan fumbles through life in Afghanistan leaving her two boys in America in the care of her mother, she takes off to a foreign land to escape her abusive second husband and, more importantly, to improve the lives of Afghani women. She accomplishes her goal, but not before becoming the second (though preferred) wife of an Afghani man and encountering many obstacles along the way. Through her skills as a beautician, and with help from other humanitarians, she opened the 1st modern beauty school and training salon in a country that would surely not welcome her comforts. Later she made a difference in the lives of a select number of women who are entrusted to carry on the mission, implementing the practices they learn in the beauty school in their own salons in order to provide much needed income for their families. The stories of most of the women are similar, forced at a young age into marriage with an older man, they suffer the bossiness of their mothers-in-law and mistreatment of their husbands. I don't know how accurate of a portrayal it is, but I enjoyed it and could see clearly, in my mind, the characters from her descriptions. This story is for anyone who feels that it can't be done because the author proves it can. You just need to keep moving ahead and never give up.
The writing was pretty mediocre but Debbie is hilarious :) I often caught myself laughing out loud, endearingly frank with wicked sense of humor :)
The Kite Runner , A Thousand Splendid Suns and "A bookseller of Kabul" are great companion reads, if someone is interested in reading about Afghanistan.

The Story of Zahra by Hanan Al-Shaykh is a beautifully weaved novel. This is the story of a child Zahra, from a Shia Muslim community in South Lebanon. Zahra was hoaxed and abused by her parents. To escape, she seeks a haven with her uncle who is living as a political exile in West Africa. Later she realized it was a mistake going to her uncle, who had feelings for his niece. Then to escape her uncle, she marries a man whom she'll never love. Then she flees to a war-torn Beirut, and falls in love with a sniper. Love, despair, violence and death then ensue. A Chillingly told story of a woman's search for peace and love in a world rended by war. I had good time reading this book, especially the ending is very shocking and powerful.
The Story of Zahra has been banned in Arab countries because of its political nature.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. Anita Rau Badami describes a beautiful story of the present and different versions of the past together in her book "Tamarind Woman". I must say author has a remarkable memory, the attention to small little details from her Indian childhood. Anita Badami wraps around the story between the daughter Kamini (in Canada) walking down her memory lane....at the same time...the mother Saroja (in Madras) has an entirely different view of the same circumstances (which you realize after completing the book.....) The author exposes the subtle ways that culture and family relationship are transferred from generation to generation in a refreshing and unique way, always in tune to the physical surroundings in which this transfer occurs. There is also a sense of mystery which unfolds gradually and a satisfying feeling at the end of the novel because the author accomplished her task to educate and entertain at the same time and being an immigrant I could relate to this book.
A well written book. If you enjoy learning about other cultures or if you're just interested in human relationships, you'll enjoy this book :)

"The Feast of Roses" a beautifully written sequel to The Twentieth Wife relates the married life of Mehrunnisa, the twentieth and most beloved wife of Emperor Jahangir, better known as Nur Jahan "The Light of the World", and her rise to power through her marriage to Jahanghir 4th Mughal Emperor in 17th Century India. Indu Sundaresan draws us into another world so vividly...sandalwood and roses, rustle of silk, cool marble floors under our feet, tiger hunts, the intrigue of the Mughal court, the hidden power of the Imperial harem (the Zenana)the circling European powers looking for a foot in the door to the riches of India.
Mehrunnisa had no sons, only a daughter from a former marriage. She therefore had to make choices as to who to support. Mostly, she was smart and made wise choices. But her political ambitions grew too large. But things don't exactly go according to plan as her very own niece Arjumand Banu (better known as Mumtaz-e-Mahal for whom Taj Mahal was built) the wife of her step son Prince Khurram, refuses to go along with her schemes and defies her outright. Prince Khurram refuses to bow to Mehrunnisa's wishes and will eventually end up fighting for his and his family's life against his father's armies sent by Mehrunnisa. And later Khurram and his family will live as outlaws, hunted down by the imperial army, treated as traitors. Later, Mehrunnisa's niece became the woman for whom the Taj Mahal was built and she was the one who will be remembered from that period of time. But as this book clearly points out, the woman with the political clout was really Mehrunnisa.
I have a love affair with historical romance novels, and "The Feast of Roses" didn't disappoint me. The author's storytelling is masterful, you can actually visualize the sights of the sumptuous Mughal empire, smell the aromas, feel the desert heat, chess games, love, lust, friendship, betrayal and so much more. Both novels The Twentieth Wife and "The Feast of Roses" were page turners and I enjoyed immmesely :) If someone is interested in South Asian history will enjoy these novels aswell :)
