I LOVE BOOKS! Ex libris - see my library detailed here.
It's always a delight to read and re-read Jane Austen. It took a long time for me to enjoy her novels, as I had had to read them as part of undergraduate study, and that put me right off! However, it has to be said, that books you rediscover as you get older, hold more meaning and bring new aspects to light. I found this with Persuasion.
I always see little Asian faces, and Asian scenarios when I read Austen, Dickens, even good old Shakespeare. This of course is testament to their being universal stories, and quite modern, and a mark of excellent literature. And I know they say you shouldn't, but I really like this book cover, and I always look at book covers, and this was also a reason why I bought it... Obsessions!
By the by, I bought this book for £1, a solitary pound - not bad, eh? [still reading]
~ Attended a very interesting author event in Daunt Books yesterday
evening, Amitav Ghosh talking on his new book, Sea of Poppies.
The event was great, Ghosh is a fascinating and passionate speaker;
the venue, an old-fashioned bookshop in the middle of London, and a
lovely shop at that, where you can browse books at your leisure, I was in bliss...
Confessions of a bookaholic. I have dragged my old friends around for at least 45 years. Mission control has suggested that it's time to lose some weight.
When I stop to consider, perhaps some other bibliophile needs some. Maybe.

📷The Photo was Shot in Filoli, also known as the Bourn-Roth Estate, is a country house set in 16 acres of formal gardens surrounded by a 654-acre estate, located in Woodside California, about 25 miles south of San Francisco, at the southern end of Crystal Springs Reservoir, on the eastern slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Author: Her first novel, Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man, was on the New York Times bestseller list for ten weeks. Her second, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, praised by Harper Lee and Eudora Welty, was on the Times list for thirty-six weeks. It was made into the memorable hit movie Fried Green Tomatoes, starring Jessica Tandy and Kathy Bates. The screenplay, also written by Flagg, earned her the coveted Scripters Award and was nominated for an Academy Award and the Writers Guild of America Screen Award. Her reading of the Random House audiobook received a Grammy nomination.
Official word came down the chain of command, and the word is that it's time to do something about "all those books!" Being a dutiful spouse I acknowledged that I did indeed maybe have "a few", for some definitions of a "few".
So I started pulling some out. Some time later I was caught still thumbing through the first batch. Oh dear, my old friends...it's time we part ways. May you find new partners to tell your tales to.

The Saffron Kitchen by Yasmin Crowther is a novel about the struggles that an Iranian girl faces as she goes through different stages of her life. Miss Crowther is a masterful story teller and I simply adored this story, immensely enjoyed the development of her vivid characters and her love of language, very well crafted sentences. A multi-layered story infused with heart, sadness and hope.
The author describes how Maryam(the main character of the story) has fought for the right to make choices her whole life. This fight has not been without consequences some dire. Maryam had to chose between East and West, her living family in London and her dying heritage in Iran. A very difficult choice, one that will cause heartache no matter what. The story is a beautiful reminder that East and West, while having different cultures, are both peopled by real human beings, with similar hopes and fears.
The best part of the book was Maryam's fascinating childhood in Iran, and Maryam's daughter Sara's changing emotions as she goes to Iran to bring back her mother are very nicely depicted.
A good read, it may be a bit of a "woman's" story but I enjoyed it :)

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "Love in the Time of Cholera" is an epic love story of two people who first fall in love as children, separate, lead their separate lives and are brought back together at the end of their lives.
Probably my favorite book of all time. Every sentence takes your breath away. I found this title deeply moving and was completely taken with every moment of each character's life. I've read this book several times and each time ended with tears in my eyes. Marquez is a master of poetic fiction and this book is written in rich and beautiful prose. Even in an English translation, the language is musical, picturesque and poetic.
Love in the Time of Cholera is not a reading experience, it is a life experience. If you choose to read it, do so uninterrupted, slowly, and with great attention. You will be rewarded with a great love story of an ill-fated love between two members of a small town in South America, and the story of their courting, a courting that lasts for over half a century.
I've recently watched the movie too, they hardly do any justice when they convert a book into a movie, but it was pretty ok. To give anymore details would be cruel, just go ahead and read the book first then watch the movie, you'll know yourself ;)
