We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

The Sound of Language by Amulya Maladi is based on an Afghani woman Raihana Khan who was able to leave her Taliban-controlled country. Alone in a Pakistani refugee camp, she receives word that a cousin named Kabir and his wife Layla, living in Denmark, would take her in. So she arrives in Denmark with no knowledge of the language or culture. To her ears the Danish language sounds like the hum of bees - completely unintelligible. But Danish law requires her to go to language class and learn to speak and read it.
This is a story of hope. Raihana's hope to find a better life, her friend Layla's hope to become Danish, Layla's husband Kabir's hope to go back to Afghanistan some day, and Gunnar's hope to live after his wife's death.
I have read all of Amulya Malladi's books and she had never impressed me with her writing style, very very mediocre. But I think this one is a step above the others. I enjoyed this book and learned about beekeeping, which was new yet the most fascinating thing for me.

The young bride and protagonist Megha, despite her good looks and intelligence ends up in a disappointing marriage that involves a weak husband and an abusive mother-in-law. The story opens with Megha's accidental discovery of her mother-in-law's plot to kill her for not bringing the promised dowry. A panicked Megha escapes to save herself from a gruesome death.
Shobhan Bantwal has delivered a superb story that weaves the controversial and archaic custom of dowry with interesting cultural elements and vivid characters that keep the reader eagerly flipping the pages.
Ohh and I must confess that I was drawn to this book by the rich texture and cover art, which often happens with me when it comes to books. Sometimes I just can't resist buying books if the covers are too pretty :)

The Kite Runner a beautiful novel by Khalid Hosseini, is one of my fav. books that ranks among the best-written and provocative stories of the year 2003. It was an unforgettable book, and even more remarkable was the fact that it was his first novel. "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khalid Hosseini, was coming out in May 2007 and I couldn't wait to read it. But after reading A Thousand Splendid Suns I found The Kite Runner to be more emotionally powerful (even devastating at times) than A Thousand Splendid Suns.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is an interesting read and keeps one absorbed till the end. I was enchanted by the story and actually moved to tears at points.The portrayal of each character is amazing and I found it easy to slip into each of their hard lives and personalities.
A Thousand Splendid Suns, spanning the lives of two seemingly very different women - Mariam and Laila - brought together by mutual suffering at the hands of their husband. Both suffer appalling traumas in spite of their different upbringing, and these horrors draw them together to become the deepest of friends. The book spans several decades and educates the reader to the destruction of life and property that Afghanistan has suffered in recent times. A book with a taste of politics. It drags the reader into a dark world, which is unfortunately a horrible reality.
Once again we have a novel set over the recent history of Afghanistan from the last days of monarchy through to the overthrow of the Taliban. This time the story is mainly through the eyes of two women Mariam, and Laila. My heart cries for Mariam, the somber and quite one, and a melancholy surrounds me when I think about it. All she wanted was to be loved by her father and husband but in return she got dejection and a death sentence. I'm sure it must have happened with so many innocent girls and they suffered a lot more than what we could ever think of. Author's writing style was emotive and fine. A very moving, powerful and poignant read.
My fav. part of the book was these two lines by a 17th Century Persian Poet. Few words but very deep and go perfectly with the story :)

"UNACCUSTOMED EARTH" by Jhumpa Lahiri is based on eight stories, divided into two sections. In this collection Ms. Lahiri again shows her ability to portray characters and produce dialog that sing with life, woven so tightly together, it would take a great deal of stretching, bending or breaking to get them to unravel. Each tale is deceptively powerful and it only takes a few pages before you're reeling and forgetting your surroundings because you're suddenly transported to a garden in Seattle or at a wedding reception in the pouring rain. Jhumpa Lahiri's imagination is ferocious, stealthy, as endless as the ocean. You float into it because it's so smooth and effortless and then suddenly, deliberately, it's engulfed you. I found myself thinking of these characters long after I finished the book.
Each of the stories deals with acculturation and relationships, and each stands out as a character study of how people find their way when faced with conflicting values and loyalties. Some of the stories took my breath away, absolutely love the way she leaps ahead in time within a single paragraph, vaulting over unnecessary components of the story with ease. The stories linger in your memory long after you finish reading them.
Jhumpa Lahiri is no doubt a master of character study, but it is true that she revisits characters with many similarities in her profile, like well-educated, often in the Boston area, Ivy league schools and American-born Indian struggling with either their own culture or a family member, and of course involves Indian parents and their struggle coming to America. Same old formula she's using and IMHO I really think her stories need a breath of fresh air :)
In this book she writes candidly about the everyday and mundane, just like my photo stream ;)
Among all her three books The Namesake , Interpreter of Maladies and Unaccustomed Earth, my all time favorite would be "The Interpreter of Maladies :)

"Serving Crazy with Curry" is about an Indian-American woman, Devi Veturi, who after losing her job in a Silicon Valley company and suffering a miscarriage, which even her own family did not know about, ponders her life and then decides to kill herself. She realizes that everything that has happened to her is her own fault, and only she can deal with it as she knows how.
She chooses the time and the method, plans it all out, and puts her plan into motion. She forgot that she made a mistake the previous year, giving her mother an extra key. On the morning when Devi attempts to kill herself nosy mom happens to come by and lets herself in with her key to find Devi in the nick of time. Devi does not consider this "saving" to be a favor. She stops talking completely and after discharge from the hospital, takes over her mother's kitchen. She started cooking new dishes that are nothing like those ever produced in her home. With this new found activity, her emotions come out through it. Extra spicy when she is angry, milder when she is mellow. Her family which includes her mother, father, sister Shobha, ultra modern grand ma and brother-in-law Girish, don't know what to make of this.
Truths long held inside are revealed as the family recovers from Devi's suicide attempt. The book is touching, poignant, and funny. It dealt with a serious problem in a sensitive and humorous way. What bothered me a little bit is the language Devi and her sister used with her father(who was an ex army officer), mother and grand ma. Being in the United States for so many years, I do not know a single desi soul, who talk to their parents using bad words. No matter what the circumstances, I've always seen so much respect in their behaviors and language.

I remember vividly, couple of years back while sauntering down the South Asian section of my local library, I noticed a book lying down on the shelf upside down, and the author's curly long hair really made me grab the book ;) It was a hard cover of "Maps for Lost Lovers" , totally different than what you see above. I was swooning with joy when few months back some one gifted me this book with a lot more enchanting cover than what I remember seeing and reading few years back :)
Maps for Lost Lovers is a poignant novel, a bit disturbing even devastating at times. But I think author's poetic prose washes away all the calamities of this beautiful and sinfully pleasurable love story :)
Nadeem Aslam's magnificent prose that reaches your soul and stirs all the emotions. All the character's names like Jugnu, Chanda, Charag, Ujala, Shamas and Kaukab are carefully chosen very poetic and connects to one another. This book evokes sadness, especially a sense of sadness which persists for a long time and deplores the breakdown in family values. Very exquisitely written and poetry is a bonus in this book :)
A must read written during the 9/11 time, Pakistani immigrants facing problems in an English town they have rechristened Dasht-e-Tanhaii, "The Wilderness of Solitude" or "The Desert of Loneliness."

Amulya Malladi...The author of A Breath of Fresh Air, The Mango Season, and Serving Crazy with Curry describes an epic tale in her book "Song of the Cuckoo Bird". This is a fascinating journey of a bunch of social misfits living in an ashram in Southern India. The house they live in is called Tella Meda , the house with the white roof, and the dwellers range from the Guru of the ashram to a woman who ran away from a husband, to the daughter of a prostitute, a man whose children won't support him and so on and so forth. The protagonist, Kokila (means cuckoo bird in Hindi)) stands in the center of the story. Kokila came to Tella Meda when she was 11 years old, an orphan and a wife. When the time comes for her to leave for her husband's home (girls had to be mature before they could go to their husband's house), Kokila refuses and lives the rest of her life in Tella Meda itself. This book is about the decisions we make and how those decisions mold our lives. Amulya Malladi successfully describes the feel of what it is like to live in an ashram, the diverse people who come and go, and the poverty that engulfs those who reside there.
The only problem I have with this book is that there are too many characters that have similar names, and it is easy to get them confused with one another. Some of these characters are even unnecessary the author just eliminates them from the story entirely. My favorite chapter which I specially loved is about the ashram getting a television. All the ladies getting done ahead of time from their daily rituals to watch television was so fascinating :)

The Sari Shop, the debut novel of Rupa Bajwa, gives a strong portrayal of the vast inequities between the rich and the poor working class in India. Bajwa gives a gratifying glimpse into the daily life of Ramchand, a sari shop assistant. She also brings us into the relationships between the shop assistants; Gokul, Chander, Shyam, Rajeshi and Hari, their supervisor Mahajan, and the wealthy women on the other side of the counter.
This is a journey into an intoxicating rich life of color and silks. I loved the description of the Sari shop itself. We step in from the noise, heat, dust and charged interactions in the street to the cool, dark interiors of the shop packed with crisp Bangladeshi Cottons, dazzling Kajeevarams, Benaras Silks, Chiffons, Crepes and Satins, from shelf to shelf.
The author gives a good insight on the extremes of Indian society. Though some people may find it depressing, that's the reality and Ms. Bajwa tackles the issues boldly and illustrates the helplessness of a Sari shop assistant. A quick read, The Sari Shop, nevertheless provokes a deeper reflection on the ties that bind us all to the life we know :)

I wept, felt revolted, but I found myself immediately caught up in the lives, laughter, tears, history, gossip, ambition and sheer guts of Maha, an aging, Lahore "dancing girl" through the grace of Louise Brown's writing, who lived with her family in a dingy, crumbling, ancient quarter of Lahore. Louise Brown lived in wretched conditions to observe the life of Maha, a woman in her 30s who has retired in an industry where rookies are as young as 10 years old. You get to see the dilemma that her young 14 years old is shipped to Gulf to be a mistress for an old Arab. This can be very painful reading, very young girls are raised to be prostitutes, neglect and abuse are rampant. By the time these girls have "aged out" to their 20s, they are virtually worthless and must in turn raise their own daughters to be prostitutes. Without any ability to earn money from anything but sex (with the very youngest girls), this degradation carries on from generation to generation, often with grandmother, mother and daughter all prostituted to the same depraved wealthy men.
The author gives an in-depth point of view of daily life in Lahore, following the lives of several characters and families as she personally visits them over a seven year period. Through her portrayal of their lives, one can gain a great understanding of a world and culture so completely different from their own. The vivid descriptions make you feel like you are there living in Heera Mandi. I learned so much about the mentality of Pakistani women who are living in a cycle of prostitution. It makes me understand why it is so difficult to get out of this situation with the society being so unforgiving. Author weaved the book so beautifully,you can see the images in your mind's eye with near-perfect clarity. It broke my heart , not only because of what these women go through, but to see the way their pimps treat them and they just accept it and know no other way. They have no options and choices available to them, yet they don't seem to realize just how bad things are. Louise Brown spent months with the women and eunuchs at the Heera Mandi, yet had nothing but praise for their hospitality and respect towards her. At the end, they are humans who had the misfortune to be born in that part of the society, and they are doing the best they know of, keeping their traditions alive, and surviving on a day to day basis.
A stunning, heartbreaking and amazing book on a secret culture of Red Light area which is also known as Heera Mandi in Lahore, Pakistan, and a fascinating journey into a side of Indo-Pakistani culture usually, carefully hidden from view. Give it a try and do read this book.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

I regard Lahiri as a worthy successor to R.K.Narayan for her fluency and talent as "Interpreter of Maladies" so wonderfully said her Pulitzer Prize winning collection of short stories.
The Namesake is a tremendous novel...beautiful prose...deeply-hued characters within an interesting story...It is not however "Interpreter of Maladies" her debut work...Every single story in the prior novel ended with me craving more...wishing they would go on....The Namesake is a story about the Ganguly's - Ashoke....his wife Ashima who is a sweet..simple and a conventional wife/mom...the children Gogol and Sonali... Ashoke and Ashima Ganguli have a traditional family background in Calcutta...After they marry (an arranged marriage) they move to Cambridge, Massachusetts where Ashoke pursues his education....Their lives are made more difficult by the separation from their families and homeland and they cope by drawing their Bengali friends in the U.S. close to them...Through an implausible series of events...they have no name prepared when their son is born....Forced to put down something they choose "Gogol" to be his name...To their son..that name is a curse that he bears which puts distance between him and his family....The book revolves around Gogol and end with him drawing comparions of his life with his namesake, the Russian writer Nikolai Gogol....Ashima Ganguli is her finest creation in the book and you will relate deeply to this woman...What bothered me alittle about the book is that it moves off of Ashima too much after the beginning....The first part of the book focusing on the parents is primarily a social novel...The second part..focusing on the son but the mother also to some extent is more a novel of character....The novel is touching and quite true to the reality that immigrants and children of immigrants from any nationality have to face...The author reveals the hardships of living apart from our closest family members...missing birthdays and deaths.
When a book is made into a film there are so many expectations...Mira Nair is a very talented director and she made "The namesake" which I thoroughly enjoyed...I have seen almost all her films and love the way she portrays her charaters so well developed that everytime I felt like I was there myself....Beautiful cinematoghraphy....So evocative and when I cried I felt someone I knew died....very poignant and intensely emotional and so well produced movie.
