biting it's fleas... awww cute etc

This is another nasty biting fly in our mountains with a drop of my blood from my leg last week, see this photo and this photo. I believe it is in the family Tabanidae of Horse and Deer Flies, but it is not much larger than a house fly and its eyes are quite plain unlike many other Tabanids. I believe it is genus Apatolestes in the subfamily Pangoniinae, maybe the species Apatolestes hinei. HFDF! (San Marcos Pass, 16 July 2026)

I got in the water, and got bit by something pretty quick, so I got out and looked to see if it was a crab. I didnt see anything except these little fish, so I got back in and sure enough it was them. The bites were like little pin pricks, and with 15-20 of them going at it, I couldnt handle more than 20-30 seconds of it. I dont think these are the fish that eat the dead skin, but maybe similar. Whats odd is that I could sit on a rock and dangle my feet in the water and they wouldnt bite, but if I put my feet in the sandy bank of the river, they were all over it. I guess thats their domain.
