Ouch! This is a nasty biting fly in our mountains biting my arm a few days ago. I believe it is in the family Tabanidae of Horse and Deer Flies, but it is not much larger than a house fly and its eyes are quite plain unlike many other Tabanids. I believe it is genus Apatolestes in the subfamily Pangoniinae, maybe the species Apatolestes hinei. HFDF! (San Marcos Pass, 30 July 2023)

So far, no one has bit me when I've held them. This is Spazzy, being well behaved.

This is a "no-see-um" or "biting midge" in the fly family Ceratopogonidae. Colorado Springs, Colorado, July 3.
