A bit of black and white action in Minnewaska State Park Preserve. Our little weekend getaway trip allowed us to enjoy some badly needed outdoor time and this spot was a highlight.
This image was made in Cornwall this year. I was trying to use the very hard and sharp nature of the rock to juxtapose the soft moving water against it. I find the contrast in these situations appealing; they are almost more than the sum of parts. I also particularly like the dark grey wet rocks texture against the foreground subtle colours. You can even see reds, browns and blues in there. I also like the subtle conditions I found myself in on this sunset shoot and the thin band of light on the horizon is almost understated. Honestly I was hoping for the sun to burst underneath it and illuminate the bottom of the clouds, but even though this didn’t happen I particularly like the contrast between the heavy clouds and stormy sea feel to this image. Anyway, this little part of the coast near Treyarnon bay I know rather well. I must have done about 100 sunsets over the years I’ve been going there, and I never tire of trying to make something new from it. Anyway, it will be interesting to see what you think…
Squeesing and pushing every bit of an underexposed (-2 EV) Raw file!
This picture was meant to be the third shot for an HDR file. Unfortunately the three pictures were not perfectly aligned (no tripod). But before deleting the picture series I decided to play with the GND (graduated neutral density filter) in lightroom. I started by applying a -1/3 EV GND mask to the sky, and a +2EV mask to the rest of the picture. The first attempt, even if not perfect in particular througout the transition between trees and sky, looked already more than promising and pushed me to convert the raw in tiff16bit and to repeat the same operation in PS CS4, that in contrast to Lr provides more latitute and control on the mask definition. And this is the results. Basically I have squeezed the 10 EV of a RAW file in the 8EV of a jpeg.
What surprised me was the huge latitude in pushing the shadows without having to deal with cromance or luminance noise. So if your scene have a strong luminace contrast (10-11EV max) and you want to reduce the risk to burn the highlights, simply expose correctly for the highlights and try to recover the shadows detail in CS4. Furthermore this approach allows firstly to remove the risk of having moving objects (like the tree leaves) and secondly to increase the shutters speed of 2EV, so bye bye dammed tripod! The only precautions are to assure yourself that the scene doesn't exceed the dynamic range of your camera RAW (usually 10-12EV) through the spot exposure meter and to shoot with low ISO sensitivities (100-200).

A picture of a watch without anything else is at worst an image of someone else’s art and at best can be a showcase for the photographer’s expertise at exposure and composition. This image has more meaning to me than you may grasp at first glance so I’ll complete the story here. SPOILER ALERT: It’s a bit long so if you’d like to skip it ... that’s Okay. Just remember to enjoy Today.
The title may attract the attention of a few people already familiar with the acronym. More later ... I purchased the timepiece pictured some 50 or more years ago and it has always been a disappointment ... it still looks almost pristine! It’s promise was that it was self-winding, that is by some engineering magic once it was wound and put on my wrist it somehow was supposed to stay wound enough to keep “good time”. Well, here’s the basic truth; if I wind it up and let it lay on the shelf it will keep perfect time until it runs down in a couple of days. If put it on my wrist it will randomly stop for 5 or 10 minutes at a time from the first hour on ... making it functionally useless!
In the mid-80s after a life changing event I learned that I can only live One Day at a Time (ODaaT). I realized this independent worthless timepiece is in fact a constant reminder that I only have today ... yesterday is history and tomorrow is not yet in play.
It has no other numbers than today’s calendar number and day ... today ... if I keep it wound. My every attempt to use it for my purposes by wearing it ... my actions ... screws up it’s basic time keeping function so if I let go and let it do it’s thing on the shelf all works just fine. I’m some 16 years into retirement and I removed my “working” watch the day I retired ... I know where time is being kept and I can freely live TODAY. This is my entry for this week's Macro Mondays theme, Sidelit.
This is an interesting tool, it is called a Snail Countersink Bit, used to create a countersink or a chamfer around a hole in manufacturing, to remove sharp edges (also called deburring)
It is also used to create a conical recess for countersunk screws.
It is lit with a mobile phone light through a plastic tray to show the fringes.
A bit of sidewalk from the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. I'm not sure whether to call this "Steppin' Out" or "Watch Out!" because this line-drawn person seems to be about to take a big bold step right onto a ball. What do you think?

A mild winter so far gave us the chance to witness these early December sceneries one month late.
All images captured with the new Nikon 70-200 f2.8 E FL on the D810. This lens is simply amazingly good. Otus quality in a zoom lens. A first in my book.
A bit of garden moss growing in our garden. Bits of garden debris are on top of the moss (green). The debris looks like wood chips, dried grass clippings, and dead flowers from trees and bushes.
The round things with points are not "pointy nosed aliens" but are a "spore capsules" full of spores, which when mature, will open and allow the millions of spores to be blown about by the wind.

A bit messy, but the best I could get right side of the fence. 60002 "Graham Farish – 50th Anniversary 1970 - 2020" parked in Sudforth Lane sidings with the previous days (New Years Day) 6M34 05.45 Drax AES - Sudforth Lane Signal Box. This should have been up at Liverpool, but was held back due to flooding west of Todmorden. Pole shot. 02/01/25.
made by the man shown below. See that image for details on this internationally famous Czech master. This piece (about 50cm or 20 inches) was fashioned from a big piece of refuse glass from a Turkish commercial bottle making factory. First he used a hammer and chisel to rough out the shape. Then various diamond grinding and sanding tools to refine the shape, Then he used the tip of an old carbide drill bit to chip the patterns you see. Finally hours and hours of polishing.

I wanted to try something a bit different here, so this is a shot of the incredibly hot Wadi Rum desert in Jordan that has been slightly tweaked in post processing to "cool" the image a bit.
