Birdsong Park in Orchard Park, NY has grown on me over time becoming one of my favorite places to visit and photograph in all seasons. Today, I'm sharing a set of black and white photographs from there from early summer. Their common theme is creeks. They are also connected by ... #etbtsy

The calendar says spring is here but the scenery can't confirm it. I took a beautiful walk yesterday evening and it snowed the entire time. But what you can't hear in this photo is the sound of birdsong: the birds do not seem to be discouraged, and that is good enough for me. The snow will melt, I tell myself.

Someplace quiet, where birdsong floats on a soft breeze as it gently sways the willow branches, and the tranquil sound of trickling water soothes and calms.

The shot wasn't the best in quality, but it has such a nice feel to it that I couldn't discard it.

Robin taken a couple of weeks ago, I couldn't believe how close I was able to get while this beauty sang its heart out.

Anyway today I was catching up on a couple of YouTube videos and was inspired to look at the crop ratios of some of my images. I would never normally use a 2:1 ratio on an image like this but now I have I really think it suits it.

No matter where we meet, the bold little Wren sends out a persistent warning of our presence. It is bubbly and energetic - just like its song. A perfect little sentinel.

In the past, birdsong has been studied almost exclusively in males. However, birds in the tropics and the southern hemisphere are a different story, and Australian studies have revealed female birds vocalise just as much as males, if not more. The finding raises an important question: if female birdsong provides an advantage in female-female communication, why have female birds in temperate climates lost the ability to sing? ....from a walk through Oxley Creek Common. Oxley Creek Common is home to a remarkable variety of birds. An experienced observer can find as many as 70 species in one hour of observation during the spring about 10% of all Australia's bird species and several times the diversity one could find walking the suburbs. In the past eleven years over 190 species have been recorded on the Common. (Source: University of Queensland)

Superb Fairy-wren (I think? - a toss up between the red-backed and superb)

Scientific Name: Malurus cyaneus

Description: Adult male Superb Fairy-wrens are among the most brightly coloured of the species, especially during the breeding season. They have rich blue and black plumage above and on the throat. The belly is grey-white and the bill is black. Females and young birds are mostly brown above with a dull red-orange area around the eye and a brown bill. Females have a pale greenish gloss, absent in young birds, on the otherwise brown tail. The legs are brown in both sexes. Males from further inland and in the south-west of the range have more blue on the back and underparts.

Similar species: Several other species of fairy-wren are found in Australia. The males of each species are quite distinct, but the females and young birds are often difficult to separate. Of the species that overlap in range with the Superb Fairy-wren, the female White-winged Fairy-wren Malurus leucopterus and Red-backed Fairy-wren M. melanocephalus lacks the chestnut colour around the eye, while the female Variegated Fairy-wren M. lamberti has a dull grey-blue wash. Both the Superb and White-winged Fairy-wrens are similar in size. The Variegated Fairy-wren is slightly larger in size and has a longer tail.

Distribution: Superb Fairy-wrens are found south of the Tropic of Capricorn through eastern Australia and Tasmania to the south-eastern corner of South Australia.

Habitat: Seen in most habitat types where suitable dense cover and low shrubs occur. They are common in urban parks and gardens, and can be seen in small social groups. These groups normally consist of one dominant male and several females and young birds.

Feeding: Superb Fairy-wrens feed on insects and other small arthropods. These are caught mostly on the ground, but may also be taken from low bushes. Feeding takes place in small social groups.

Breeding: The nest is a dome-shaped structure of grasses and other fine material. It is usually placed in a low bush and is constructed by the female. The female incubates the eggs alone, but both sexes feed the young. Other members of the group will also help with the feeding of the young.

Male Superb Fairy-wrens have been labelled as 'the least faithful birds in the world'. Females may be courted by up to 13 males in half an hour, and 76% of young are sired by males from outside the social group.

Calls: The Superb Fairy-wren gives a series of high pitched trills, which are given by both sexes. The male often extends these trills into song.

... So what was different? Since I visit the park often I try to be very careful about what I photograph. Did I photograph it before? Is it any different? Should I press the shutter? Traveling back in time again, this time to mid-October in Birdsong Park in Orchard Park, New York (NY). This was my sunrise outing and as I was moving from one pond to another I had to pass through this gorgeous tunnel. I know, had to may sound like a punishment when in fact that alone would have been enough to keep me busy that morning.

I've had a lot of excuses lately for not going out and shooting, being sick one of them. But I've really felt the itch the last few days and when the weather forecast called for a sunny morning with frost advisory I had to go out. Set the alarm for 6 AM and head out! I was hoping for some nice low fog over the evaporating water with this difference in water and air temperatures and it worked out perfectly. I suspected geese would be there too but was fine either way.

I botched up quite a few initial pre-sunrise photos though! I was playing with double exposures over the weekend and forgot that mode turned on! I got so used to the fact that switching custom settings resets "everything" on my D600 that I did not even check. I switched to my landscape setting and started tweaking the camera from there without giving it much thought. With some old settings, it might have been obvious but with the double exposures, I went on for quite a while :-( I was working on a tripod and my compositions did not vary too much from frame to frame. Ouch ... Lesson learned - custom settings do not reset double-exposure settings on the D600!

I have not seen the prescribed variation. However, I have certainly received purple results with all of that greenery the park is filled with. I dislike most digital filters, I really dislike over-processed photos, and I am not a fan of special effect films. But here we are and I have to admit I enjoy the results ... #etbtsy

I've been feeling pretty lost all day, now Aaron isn't here I don't quite know what to do with myself. So I went into town and bought some white paint. We didn't manage to speak last night, so hopefully we will today! Its such a strange feeling. As though I'm fading a little. Weird. I haven't washed the paint off yet.

LITTLE WHITE BIRD

Thankfully, I have my camera to keep me busy. On saturday after he'd left I was seriously doubting whether I'd be able to pick up my camera for a while, because my photos don't seem complete without him. But the next day, after speaking on gmail, I got my canon out and took yesterdays 365 and felt much better. Awesome!!

Anyway, I have a motive for posting a picture today other than my up-and-coming compilation shmunday post with aaron -

I NEED YOUR HELP, FLICKR.

I've been hired by a dental surgery in the town near mine to take some photos to be displayed on the walls of the surgery - i've had a meeting with the dentist hiring me, and he said he saw my photos and wanted an unconventional theme. Basically, not just people with hollywood smiles looking all pretty, but some unique stuff too. So, to conclude this ramble, if anyone on flickr near buxton/manchester/macclesfield etc would like to do some modelling for this shoot, it would be greatly appreciated! if you have super good teeth, even better, but not essential. I need men and women, one or two of each. Unfortunately I don't have much money because I'm a student, but I can help contribute towards any travel fees.

Another thing I need help with is an idea someone brought up on flickr - a while back, someone or maybe two people left a comment suggesting me and aaron apply to go on the Ellen DeGeneres Show - at first we laughed, but then Aaron's Mom suggested why don't we give it a go! I can't send in an application because I'm not from the states, but if any of you guys fancied putting in a word on my behalf, then here is a link! So far, me and Aaron have done a live radio interview and been featured in the Philippine Daily Inquirer!!!! See it flickr.com/photos/pajammy/2731432247/ and here!

So there we go, me asking a whole ton of favours!!! Of course no one should feel obliged, but it would be awesome if you could help me out!!!

As the sun had came out to warm up this scene, a melodic birdsong had suddlenly broke the silence.

A walk in the woods.
