A Sandhill Crane pair look alert in Police Outpost Provincial Park, Alberta, which is very close to the USA border and lies in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The smaller bird on the left was apparently a female.
That curious look
The common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) has 20–30 races ranging across Asia. Birds naturalized elsewhere are mixtures of races, with the gray-rumped ringneck (or Chinese) strain usually dominatin
Colourwise autumn is Tofu's season, he always looks particularly beautiful among autumn leaves. Weatherwise he prefers summer as its much too cold and wet now for his taste. He makes the most of occasional dry moments, though, and visits his feathered friends in the garden. :)
This female Oriental Magpie-Robin was seen at the same time as the male (shown here in this photo of mine www.flickr.com/photos/luminouscompositions/53973992031/in... ) in Rama IX Park in Bangkok, Thailand. This species is widespread on the Indian subcontinent and in Southeast Asia and Indonesia.
Day 329/366 of Project 365 (Tuesday, 2020 November 24 - 198th consecutive daily photo): Affectionally known as birdwatching when I took up the hobby oh so many years ago, those who engage in the sport have since adopted the more masculine-sounding term birder.

Captured this with three RAW shots at -2..0..+2 EV. Digital blending in Photoshop CS6. Increased the overall saturation with Hue/Saturation in Photoshop. Curve adjustment to increase the overall contrast. 1 layer mask in soft light mode at 50% gray, using brush tool to lighten and darken some areas of the image, to bring out details. Topaz DeNoise to reduce noise. Topaz Lens Effect using Diffusion filter to create this soft look.
Another one from my archive. The Bronze Cranes at The Portland Japanese Garden in Autumn. This was captured in the fall of 2014. Going to miss shooting the Japanese Garden in the Fall this year, since it'll be closed for expansion project from September 8 through March 2016. Have a great weekend everyone!

This was taken on my first visit to the beautiful island of Enlli ( Bardsey Island ) situated off the tip of Penrhyn Llyn ( Llyn Peninsula ) Gwynedd, North Wales. It's at the north western end of the island with Mynydd Mawr on the tip of the Llyn Peninsula in the background behind one of the stone built hides, this was the first morning of our visit. There was high wind and rough seas on the day we crossed and it was late afternoon by the time the boatman decided we could attempt a crossing, that was to be the last boat in or out for the whole week. As a result of the conditions it turned out to be a very good week for seawatching, at times there were many thousands of birds every hour passing offshore on their autumn migration. Sitting in the hide and looking out to sea marvelling upon the spectacle unfolding in front of us was an unforgettable experience.
Like the kelp goose, the males and females differ quite a bit in their plumage. In both species, the males have quite a bit of white, while the females are mottled and much better camouflaged for sitting on a nest.
I have read that the upland geese on the Falklands are one of two subspecies. The other is a bit smaller and lives in the south end of South America. The SA version has been found on the Falklands but the Falklands version tends to be more sedentary and has never been recorded on the mainland.

A female Common Goldeneye is taking off, which involves running along the water with feet helping wings to get airborne. This process is more involved than in some duck species, such as Mallard and the teals, which leap out of the water in an explosive jump (aided by the wings pushing down on the water to give lift).
