Silvery Grebe is a small, elegant grebe of South America, found primarily in the southern part of the continent but also occurring to the northwest up into Colombia. The species primarily breeds colonially on bodies of freshwater. This individual was seen on Laguna Piuray near Cusco, Peru.

Behavior of these birds:
Probes into sand or mud with its long bill for aquatic invertebrates. Sometimes walks while probing or takes a few steps before burying its bill into the mud. Social outside of the breeding season; forages in groups and also with Willets, Whimbrels, and Long-billed Curlews.

Blacktoft Sands has seen a great influx of people, birdwatchers to see the white tailed Plover. This bird has been very mobile and indeed on our day the Plover was seen at almost every hide by myself and Phil Smithson.

A nice little surprise today. there were at least four juvs out today.
Two White Ibis, Two Calicos, a bunch of adult Little Blues and the Tricolor were also out today.

The name of this specimen is "El comandante" and is equipped with a GPS device as the species is the subject of a reintroduction project.
Great Gray Owls of Canada
The Great Gray Owl (Strix nebulosa) is a very large owl, documented as the world's largest species of owl by length. It is distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, and it is the only species in the Strix (genus) found in both Eastern and Western Hemispheres. In some areas it is also called Phantom of the North, Cinereous Owl, Spectral Owl, Lapland Owl, Spruce Owl, Bearded Owl, and Sooty Owl.
