Quite different from the flatwater waders I normally encounter, an American Dipper plies the rushing water of the North Fork Big Thompson River on the Dunraven Trail near Glen Haven, Colorado. This little fellow was constantly on the move in low light on the first morning of my recent Rocky Mountains trip. I spent a lot of time hiking along pristine whitewater streams but never saw another during the course of my travels.

Mountain streams and brooks are nature’s flowing veins. Attending them with a bit of cavernous perceptibility allows one to feel the pulsating throb of our planet. Here, come with me… Stand next to the lazy stream and focus your senses on what you see and hear. You will likely hear soft gurgling of water as it flows past those rocks and invisibly mends them in shape. You will see the turmoil in the water body, where everything is in flux and the only constant is the flow. Let’s be a little adventurous… go ahead, dip a part of your person in the flowing water. You will feel it is cold and your instinct will be to withdraw yourself from the chill. However, if you give yourself and the rivulet some time, you will become friends. The water will not be cold and withdrawn anymore. Instead, you will feel it rubbing your skin like a down feather. Softly, tenderly… as if it is infatuated with you. Next, try to smell the water. It is very likely, you will first smell the damp – mingling odors of algal, fungal and decomposing matter that hang loose in the wet air. But with time and your friendship with the stream, you will slowly smell the musty sweat of earth. Now, pay close auditory attention to your new friend and you will soon know that the river’s gurgling is structured in an octave; she is singing a never-written hymn. And she is talking to you.

If you haven’t realized already, all this while, you have been in the company of an oracle, who in her autumn attire, is silently conveying you an eternal prophecy: despite all odds, seasons, reasons, pains, and elation… all we can do is flow. Just flow.

A beautiful morning spent in Rocky Mountain National Park. When the alarm went off at 3:40am on Sunday morning, I contemplated staying in bed, but my girlfriend and I got up and headed for the park. As we were driving through Moraine Park, I noticed a big wall of clouds on the horizon and knew there wouldn't be any color in the sky. I found this section along the Big Thompson River and was instantly drawn to the formations the ice had created. It was difficult to get my tripod set up along the steep bank, but I stabbed 2 legs through the thin ice, and had the third on the riverbank. I waited for the sun to break over the wall of clouds, and when it did, it produced some beautiful soft light on the peaks in the background. The nice curve above the big rock in the foreground wasn't frozen when we got there, but by the time we were done shooting, it had frozen right up, pretty spectacular. As I was packing up, another photographer was getting back to his car. I always enjoy my interactions with other photographers out in the field, everyone is very friendly, for the most part. I asked him if he had any luck and he said, "nope, there was no light." I was baffled by this because we were in the same location, and there was great light. Not sure what he was looking for, but it seems that he missed it. There was no color in the sky, but still beautiful light. He didn't continue the conversation after that, and I was disappointed about it. We all share the same passion and it's great to talk and share it with others alike. Don't be that person out in the field!

A serene river in Northern Colorado cascades over large rocks, creating small waterfalls and smooth, flowing water. The natural setting is framed by rugged, rocky terrain and the faint glow of sunlight in the far background.

Waters of the Big Thompson River resist the freezing temperatures of winter for as long as possible. A colorful sunrise sure looks warmer for a moment but soon enough, even the holdout surface waters will succumb to the cold and freeze solid for the winter. I've always enjoyed mixing warm and cool colors and all the ice on the Big Thompson River made this a great chance to make it happen.
