19th June is World Albatross Day!!
Established in 2020 to raise awareness of a conservation crisis surrounding these large seabirds,WAD marks the anniversary of an international treaty, the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP), which came to be in reaction to a large number of albatrosses and petrels killed by fisheries operations. Albatrosses are also at risk due to predicted sea-level rise, the increase in the number and severity of storms, flooding, and other consequences of climate change.
Black browed albatross at Bempton Cliffs
This is a bird I have rarely seen and one I had definitely not photographed before. The picture was taken at Bempton just a few yards from the visitor centre.
There were lots of these in the bushes near the visitor centre at RSPB Bempton Cliffs. They are less common than House Sparrows (the black patch on the cheek distinguishes them) but seem to be doing well at Bempton.
For some reason I hadn't previously been to Bempton Cliffs to witness the activities of the hundreds of thousands of seabirds. The kittiwake seemed the most numerous but the grander of the gannet with its six foot wingspan will catch the eye of most. In this view just below one of the viewing galleries a dozen or so are seen at rest.
A more conventional view of a gannet calling before diving - unlike the last one, this is exposed normally
Nesting season at Bempton Cliffs. This gannet had taken off, presumably in search of more nesting material.
