The markings around the beak make this seabird distinct from other auks such as Guillemots.

Bempton Cliffs are a great place to see wildlife not just seabirds. The RSPB staff and volunteers are hugely helpful and the visitors follow that example - always someone to chat to.

19th June is World Albatross Day!!

Established in 2020 to raise awareness of a conservation crisis surrounding these large seabirds,WAD marks the anniversary of an international treaty, the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP), which came to be in reaction to a large number of albatrosses and petrels killed by fisheries operations. Albatrosses are also at risk due to predicted sea-level rise, the increase in the number and severity of storms, flooding, and other consequences of climate change.
