Antisocial behaviour in Stockport West has been reduced by 1,061 incidents in the past twelve months. This is a 20.9 per cent reduction.
In response to local concerns since 1 April 2010, officers have made more than 145 alcohol seizures from underage drinkers, 350 visits to offenders’ homes and seized and crushed eight off-road bikes. In the same period officers made more than 250 visits to pubs and off-licences and made 50 arrests and summons.
The success has been attributed to Operation Antidote which sees extra officers on patrol every weekend throughout the year, and other key times including school holidays. To help implement longer term solutions to local issues officers are joined on patrol with staff from schools, local councillors and other agencies from the Safer Stockport Partnership.
The Stockport Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour Action Team (ASBAT) has written 150 warning letters to parents from stop and search information provided by police and nearly 40 warning interview have taken place.
At the end of each weekend a community volunteer prepares an evaluation of the activity, which is used to help officers to prepare for the next weekend.
Inspector Stephen Gilbertson, who heads up the Stockport West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “It is now the end of the policing year so it is now a time to reflect on what has worked well and identify the areas we can develop to make people even safer. Antisocial behaviour has been reduced and now I want to build on this success again.
“Operation Antidote has been a fantastic success and will continue and Operation Tropical is back in place to reduce burglary in the lighter evenings. This will see extra officers directly target offenders and plain clothes and visible patrols in our communities. The best way members of the public can support us is by joining Neighbourhood Watch, however we do understand that not everybody has the time to join so we simply ask those people to report suspicious behaviour and keep their property secure by locking doors and windows.
“Without the support of the public, local community volunteers and partner agencies we would not have achieved the level of success we have so thank you all.”
Ged Lucas, Stockport Council's Corporate Director, Communities, Regeneration & Environment, said “The Council is committed to working in partnership with the police to reduce anti-social behaviour to make the borough an even safer place for residents to live, work and visit.
“The large reduction in incidents of antisocial behaviour achieved over the past 12 months is very encouraging and testament to the hard work and dedication of everybody involved in this operation. However, we are not complacent and will strive to further reduce antisocial behaviour in Stockport.”

was parked in my car waiting for people to walk across the pedestrian crossing so could photograph for crossing, and no body did, they all ran across the road only a few meters away.

A rather remarkable (but apparently surprisingly well documented) bit of behaviour that had me very surprised. I was following this small colony of Strong-billed Honeyeaters as they were nest-building in a stand of tea-tree.
At one stage I lost the birds and was amazed to relocate it perched on the back of a pademelon! As a couple of minutes of watching proved, this bird was actually picking the soft fur off the back of this poor pademelon and then using it as the inner lining to its nest (to keep its eggs nice and softly protected). I could see as the pademelon hopped away that it had a couple of spots on its back where the fur was partially missing, so I suspect it was not a stranger to such activities.
This is full-frame with just the 300 at f2.8 which goes to show how dark and how close these animals were!

Police Crackdown In Urmston And Partington.
Greater Manchester Police’s Urmston and Partington Neighbourhood Policing Team along with officers of the Force’s Specialist Operations Branch combined last Friday (7/5/10) in the latest of the Force’s Supervortex operations.
As part of the operation, Neighbourhood Policing Team and Mounted Unit officers patrolled hot spot areas and parks while officers also conducted home visits to 30 prolific offenders and visited licensed premises along with a drug detection dog.
Traffic officers conducted ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) checks on vehicles and members of the Force’s Tactical Aid Unit conducted raids on the homes of suspected offenders.
Local residents had identified anti social behaviour, youth nuisance and drugs as the priority issues for police to tackle.
Inspector Wayne Readfern of the Urmston and Partington Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “During the operation, we were approached by members of the public who said that they were very pleased to see us taking action and providing a visible presence to deter criminals.
“The actions send out a clear message to the communities of Urmston and Partington that we will deal with the issues that matter to them and will proactively target and deal with criminals who think that they are above the law.”

my behaviour these past few weeks could be straight out of a self-ruining book called "how to fuck up your sleeping habits in one easy step!".
that one easy step? try it, of you dare: once you get home from work, kick off your shoes, crawl under your duvet and fall asleep. sleep for two or three hours. when you wake up, you'll feel like a zombie. and won't be able to fall asleep for another three hours. ta-da, homegrown insomnia, done.
add to that the stress of realising upon waking up that there are still shitloads of things needing to be done before that next rapidly approaching workday, and you've got a pretty accurate picture of my evenings. i can barely drag myself into the bathroom to wash my face, brush my teeth and get my bum into pjs (or at least out of my work clothes). once i manage to do so though, i end up sitting in bed with my clean face and in my pjs, too tired to get anything done and too awake to sleep, often icq-ing with equally insomniac friends or watching the news till two or three am, feeling shitty and exhausted.
tonight was no difference: i slept from seven till about eight and just couldn't force myself to actually do something useful afterwards. i managed to take off my make up just before midnight. and, sure enough, i feel way too awake now; absolutely wiped, but at the same time annoyingly awake.
i guess it's actually quite useful, considering that until 11:30 am tomorrow i need to finish a short presentation, write a short article and two important emails, do the dishes, iron some clothes and clean my messy flat.
all i feel like doing though, is, guess what? sleep. and i don't think there's any in my immediate future. fuck.
[to add to the duh-factor of the situation: my lovely gp actually prescribed something to remedy this situation a few weeks ago. that remedy remedies this whole mess so well though, that i sleep through three different alarm clocks and can't think straight till 10am the next day, which totally messes with my workday. so there. me: fucked. no matter what.]
