Monarch butterfly spreading its wings for the first time after metamorphosis from a pupa to an adult butterfly. Photo shot in the Waikanae Estuary, New Zealand.

Monarch butterflies are a familiar and much-loved sight across New Zealand, especially during the warmer months. Although not native, they have been part of the local landscape for well over a century after arriving from Australia in the late 1800s. With their bold orange wings veined in black and dotted with white spots along the edges, monarchs are easy to recognise as they drift slowly through gardens, parks, and coastal areas.

I shot this at the San Jacinto Wildlife Area back in May and thought I'd post it.

Some of our local smaller lakes, rivers and ponds are just beginning to freeze as you can see a bit of ice in this image. I like that I can still see some reflections too.

I'm inspired by beginnings.

A first page.

A new week. Month. Year.

A new goal.

A fresh possibility slowly coming into focus.

A start.

A do-over for no reason better than doing it over.

Grateful for beginnings. As many of them as it takes.

My new years resolution is to better myself as a person and an artist and grow. I am going to do what makes me happy. I'm also dropping my 52 week project and I am going to aim for 250 photos this year. I hope everyone had a great holiday season :)

2DWF challenge = New Beginning.

In the beginning of August 2021 we went to Goldfield Nevada, an old historic mining/ghost town in the Mojave Desert, Southwest United States of America, for Goldfield days. Had a great time walking around taking photos of the town and its great people. There was a parade, bank robbery with cowboys, chili cook off, and a lot of cool and interesting people walking around. Was like going back in time.

Where life has no purpose,

and is neither civil nor intelligent,

it begins

to rain,

it begins

to smell like the bodies

of flowers.

At the back of the neck

the old skin splits.

The snake shivers

but does not hesitate.

He inches forward.

He begins to bleed through

like satin.

----Mary Oliver

I've been going through my archives a lot lately, trying to finally get some of the old pics I'd taken years ago processed, and weeding out some of the things I know I'll probably never do. It's not easy for me, since my somewhat packrat ways translate over to not being able to part with photos, either, but lately the sheer drudgery of having to wade through so many mediocre shots to find a good one is driving me nuts! Makes it a little easier to make the cuts!

This one was taken at Sugar Mill Gardens, several years back. I was looking for something yellow to post, and realizing that very few of my shots HAVE yellow in them! At least the centers of these flowers did, and the light tones weren't completely blown out by strong sun, as is often the case when I DO find yellow or white flowers in my travels.

Anyway, the petals looked quite pure to me- like something innocent- a new beginning- which is fitting as it's the first day of 2016! Happy New Year to all!

This Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) is just beginning to flower and will open up all the flowers to attract bees and to look very beautiful. It can be used in heart medicine but can also stop your heart if eaten.

Forgiveness says you are given another chance to make a new beginning.

I grew up on a street lined with Norway Maple trees, so, in my mind, this is the "classic" maple leaf. My neighbor disdains the Norway Maple as a non-native species, but they are widely planted and naturalized here. HTmT!
