I loved the look of these small beetroot, so just had to buy and photograph them.
I just can't decide which image I like the best. Can yo help me out? These are taken in early morning light on my north-east facing patio.
If you come back in a day or so I will bring you the cooked and pickled variety - delicious!
【差不多食譜】甜菜根麵包 Beetroot Bread
「紅」是甜菜根天生的胭脂，但埋藏地下的「土味」卻讓許多人離她而去。這一回「差不多食譜」的「甜菜根麵包」，要挑戰大地的泥土味，把土味的另一個意涵——質樸、未經修飾的簡單味道——轉換成麵包的香氣。只可惜天然的甜菜紅（betalain）挺不過烘焙的高溫，最後僅能在表面留下一絲嫣紅，但是土味卻被麵包給吸納，散發出的是麵粉的香味。
材料：
甜菜根、水、高筋麵粉、鹽巴、酵母粉、橄欖油

THE BEETROOT.- The Westgate Gardens (admission free, open daily...) stand alongside the River Stour and are home to the medieval Tower House, which contains the office of the Lord Mayor of Canterbury. It also contains many important archaeological remains, which include areas of a Roman wall clearly indicated by a plaque. The gardens offer the perfect place for a riverside stroll and picnic, and feeding the ducks is always ahit with children.
Apart from stunning colourful flowers and neatly trimmed lawns, you'll find an impressive plane tree with an enormous trunk that is reputed to be more than 200 years old.

L'endroit parfait à Canterbury, à deux pas des rues piétonnes commerçantes, pour décompresser au bord de la rivière Stour. Pour la vue de ces fleurs colorées, de ces pelouses rases typiquement anglaises, de ces quelques traces de la conquête romaine et de ce platane bicentenaire, le petit détour vaut... le détour.
Pulled a few tiny beets yesterday (27 June). I've let the beetroot grow to golfball size before thinning so that I don't have to throw anything away. They've really grown after all the rain and warmth over the past 3 weeks. They would probably have been bigger by now if not for the heat in March/April coupled with drought. Very odd weather we're having in the UK this year.
