Old Sins Cast Long Shadows

~~~~~
Long shadows on an enormous tank that has seen better days. Fun with light. This was located at an oil refinery near the Mojave Desert that photographer Johanna Siegmann and I were exploring at night. It's been abandoned since the 1980s. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the stairway with warm white light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light instead of paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.
A lonesome Buick greets the night at Nelson ghost town in Nevada near a full moon hidden behind mountains. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? And it's more fun than AI-generated images. This photo may appear in my fourth book of night photography, history, and stories.Photographed during a night photography workshop that we taught in the Nevada desert.
I was here in Algarve, Portugal exactly a month ago. This is one of the starting points of the Seven Valleys hiking trail called the Praia Marinaha. But I wasnt hiking that day. I was here at the crack of dawn to get some good sunrise shots and while waiting for the dawn to break, I captured this- it was more of a test shot but turned out to be a true blue hour shot when I checked it out on the big screen. Coincidentally it was also my first shot from this trip so it will always serve as a memory of this beautiful scene. Ofcourse as the day progressed I did get some fantastic sunrise shots but I still wanted to keep this blue hour picture- as a reminder to myself-THE TRANSITION FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT IS ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL
Qapla'!
If you ever do night photography in 15-degree Fahrenheit/-9.44 Celsius evenings, I recommend Hot Hands and Hot Hands Toe Warmers! BRRRRR!! 80 million years ago, Kansas was underwater, part of the Western Interior Seaway, which split North America into two land masses. These enormous chalk formations in Monument Rocks are the remains of carbonate deposits. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the enormous chalk formations with warm white light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. Here we have some very very short star trails from the 2-minute exposure.
The River Dee (Welsh: Afon Dyfrdwy) at beautiful Llangollen. This river flows through parts of both Wales and England, forming part of the border between the two countries.
Gateway to the Far Stars
~~~~~

I photographed this enormous rattledragon - well, part of it, anyway! - while teaching a night photography workshop with Tim Little in Borrego Springs. It feels like a privilege to photograph under such dark skies. But it's even more special when with a great group of people. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the enormous arch of this dragon serpent. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. This is a single exposure of fifteen seconds. That's right, I had to do my light painting verrrry fast! Master sculptor Ricardo Breceda created this and the rest of the enormous 350-foot dragon serpent. The Milky Way is the cherry on top of this mysterious gateway arch to the far stars.

We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.

We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.

Pea Green

~~~~~
The view of Pea Soup Andersen's Restaurant from the rather overgrown courtyard in back. Since I was a kid, I've stopped by Pea Soup Andersen's in Buellton to eat the Traveler's Special. I would often joke and say that it was our sort of mecca, and the main part of the trip. I was saddened to hear that the Buellton restaurant closed in January 2024. I set out to photograph it at night for nostalgia's sake. This time, it was the main part of the trip. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the building. Naturally, I had to use green light for the interior. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light instead of paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. I love seeing Joshua Trees. If I'm traveling and I see them, it means that I'm home. And Joshua Tree National Park? It's my spiritual home for night photography. Here's three Joshua Trees near Ryan Ranch with the famous Headstone Rock in the back. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.
We tend to celebrate light in our pictures. Understanding how light interacts with the camera is paramount to the work we do. The temperature, intensity and source of light can wield different photography effect on the same subject or scene; add ISO, aperture and speed, the camera, the lens type, focal length and filters…the combination is varied ad multi-layered and if you know how to use them all, you will come to appreciate that all lights are useful, even those surrounded by a lot of darkness.
We are guided by three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, our longing to capture in print, that which is beautiful, the constant search for the one picture, and constant barrage of new equipment and style of photography. These passions, like great winds, have blown us across the globe in search of the one and we do understand the one we do look for might be this picture right here for someone else out there.
This house in Zaanse Schans has been photographed to death. And I am no exception here either. This classic countryside house (a cheese shop) set in a typical farm setting, with its near perfect reflection on the pond and a brilliant orange shine from the rising sun almost sets you back in time. No wonder its a UNESCO heritage site and is the most visited touristic spot in the Netherlands.
I have also shot during the blue hour here but no matter what time of the day you shoot here, you will always get to take a brilliant picture.
The classic shot is using a wide angle lens. The only problem is you can lose a fair bjt of detail with the wider shot. What I did here was shoot a vertical pano using a 70mm lens to compress the distance and bring things closer- still capturing the entire scene. The other advantage you get shooting with a telephoto is if you do decide to print it- you can really print it massive and still retain all the details- almost as if you are IN the scene. Hope you like it
Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire
A mysterious night photo of the fascinating fireplace and television of a 1920s abandoned transcontinental airport languishing in obscurity somewhere in the Mojave Desert. I illuminated the night scene with warm white and red light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than typing key prompts for AI-generated art.
A Map of Scars
Y'know, it doesn't suck to be able to photograph abandoned vintage Dodge D400 2-ton truck. Using my handheld flashlight, I illuminated the cab interior with a brilliant teal light while the camera's shutter was open during a long exposure night photo. The rustic, worn (okay, dilapidated) interior still has its charm, and the teal light that really brought the scene to life, casting a stunning glow throughout the cab and highlighting the intricate details of the truck's design. I love having the opportunity to take something ordinary and transform it into a work of art. This was part of the Notorious RGB 1165-mile photography safari with Mike, George, and George the monkey.
Ten from Infinity
While teaching a night photography workshop, I set up my Pentax for this epic three-hour star trails photo. This shows the apparent movement of the stars over Goff's American Boy ten-stamp mill over the course of three hours. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Association in Goffs, CA, along historic Route 66.
Window To Tomorrow
Nestled in nature, it's easy to see why the Hog Farm hippie commune would have moved to this actual hog farm on top of a mountain in the 1960s. Founded by peace activist Wavy Gravy, the Hog Farm is perhaps best known for their involvement at Woodstock. Now abandoned, it was ultimately decimated by a catastrophic wildfire. This was a day for a lot of walking. Earlier that day, I had walked three miles for my usual exercise. Then in the evening, I made the 1.3-mile night hike up to the steep mountain trail. I probably walked for about two miles while photographing. Then the hike back down, where my knees began feeling the weight of the camera bag and the day's events. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the building with warm white and red light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. Of Time and Temples
~~~~~

The rubble of an abandoned limestone 1899 church in a remote prairie in Kansas, its immense rocks hauled into town by horse and wagon, built for under $5000. Regrettably, the church was abandoned in the 1960s, with much of it succumbing to fire in the late 1900s, most likely a result of arson. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the scene, illuminating the church with warm white light. The long streaks are star trails, showing the apparent movement of stars over many minutes of time.

Looking forward to spring yet? Here's a throwback to Spring 2014 when I got to hike to Grassy Creek Falls, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway near Little Switzerland, NC. If you're looking for an easy hike to a lovely waterfall, don't miss this one. The hike is just over a mile (including the dirt road). Park your car near the beginning of the dirt road and hike the first 0.5 miles to the trailhead. When you see the "trail" sign, hike another 0.5 miles to the waterfall. Please note that this waterfall is on private property and that the owners are kind enough to allow foot traffic to the falls; please respect their wishes to park all cars near the beginning of the road. Check out a video of the falls below, and enjoy your hike!

The Black Wall of Hephaestus

~~~~~
An enormous cliff of enormous black volcanic lava columns rises up through the dark of night. The basaltic columns are a result of lava contracting as it cooled, and can be seen in various locations throughout beautiful Owens Valley. For this composition, I decided to show the movement of the stars over ten minutes of time, as I loved how this would create numerous converging lines to the right where the cliff, Sierra Nevadas, and stars join together. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the cliff with warm white light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why?
