Listening to the Stars Swimming

Joshua Tree National Park beneath the beautiful dark skies. This shows the apparent movement of the stars over thirteen minutes. I photographed this while teaching a night photography workshop with Tim Little in Joshua Tree National Park. It feels like a privilege to photograph under such dark skies. But it's even more special when you're with a great group of people. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.

Night photo of of an enormous 1937 Baldwin California Western steam locomotive, a compound articulated logging Mallet built with saddletanks and later given a tender. The cool part in all this is that the locomotive uses the steam twice. I illuminated the night scene with warm white light from a handheld Lume Cube RGB Panel Pro 2.0 during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. The Midwestern night falls on this one-room limestone schoolhouse, built to last in 1896 in rural Kansas. The first teacher was paid $40 per month. I'm happy to say that teachers make a little bit more than that now. She taught eight French families ranging from five to nineteen years of age. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the scene. Al port de Hoorn tenen aquest petit far de fusta que s'anomena Havenlicht i va ser construït el 1642, a l'anar a l'àrea d'autocaravanes d'aquest poble sabia que tenia aquest far al costat, així que en arribar que ja començava l'hora daurada vaig anar directe cap allà a veure què podia fer. Tot i no tenir núvols al cel, va agafar un color molt interessant i com a la vora no tenia res, vaig mirar de fer una foto una mica minimalista, vaig haver de posar diversos filtres per allargar el temps d'exposició i mirar d'aconseguir el màxim reflex possible, ja que la mica de vent amb les onades no deixava veure un reflex clar.

Green Ice Cream and a Heart of Gold

I had been wanting to photograph this for years. I arrived on a beautiful February evening, somewhere around 47F. After stumbling in the same gully a couple of times, I put on my glasses, a grudging admission of my increasingly lousy eyesight. Stars and mountains looked gloriously sharp. I kept the glasses on for the rest of the evening. Nonetheless, I still managed to trip a couple more times It happens. This structure has stood in the shadow of the Sierra Nevadas for over a hundred years, serving Owens Valley as an ice cream parlor, a schoolhouse, a bunkhouse, and a post office. Can you imagine how great this must have been to travel through Owens Valley on hot summer days, but be able to treat yourself to cold velvety ice cream along the way? Oh, and I don't know that any of the ice cream was green. That's just one of my punny titles. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene with blue and warm white light. Named "Floralis Genérica" in homage to all flowers, this 20m-high, 18-tonne aluminium and stainless steel sculpture dominates the Plaza de las Naciones Unidas in Buenos Aires.
Unveiled in the year 2002, it was probably the world's first mobile public sculpture to be controlled by hydraulics and photoelectric sensors. It was donated to the city of Buenos Aires by its creator, the Argentine architect Eduardo Catalano, who once said the sculpture was "a synthesis of all the flowers and a hope that is reborn every day."
The six steel petals open at 8am each morning, and close at midnight. The petals also close in high winds in order to protect the sculpture, while on patriotic holidays they remain open all day.

In the early hours of Dec 17, 2023, parts of the sculpture (including a main petal) fell due to a strong storm. Repair works are still ongoing.

Hay bales. Enormous grain elevator. The quiet of night. Friends. It's all good. A long exposure night photo of an immense grain elevator rising high above the prairie of Kansas. Photo taken during the Nightaxians Journey to the Center of the Country Night Photography Trip. Tim had a fun idea that we would make this our Nightaxians lair, putting it on wheels. It could happen. For now, however, it will remain stationary. The long streaks in the sky? Star trails, showing the apparent movement of stars over 12 minutes.

Explorant per les platges de Barcelona, per buscar unes fotos interessants de l'hotel vela, just a l'inici de la Platja de Sant Miquel hi ha unes pedres que donen algo d'interès per tenir un primer pla i per guiar la vista cap a l'hotel. Va ser una posta de sol on el cel va agafar una mica de color, però el cel no tenia cap núvol per poder donar-li interès, i per això vaig decidir no donar gaire protagonisme.
