The Black Wall of Hephaestus

An enormous cliff of enormous black volcanic lava columns rises up through the dark of night. The basaltic columns are a result of lava contracting as it cooled, and can be seen in various locations throughout beautiful Owens Valley. For this composition, I decided to show the movement of the stars over ten minutes of time, as I loved how this would create numerous converging lines to the right where the cliff, Sierra Nevadas, and stars join together. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the cliff with warm white light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light instead of paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.

The Guadalquivir Canal separates the central part of Seville from the Triana Neighborhood. This area is referred to as the riverside promenade. This river walk area is generally filled with people relaxing and hanging out with friends as well as joggers and people walking their dogs.

The Great Chalk Pyramids of Kansas

What's the coldest night photography you've ever done? For me, it was this 15-degree Fahrenheit/-9.44 Celsius evening. BRRRRR!! 80 million years ago, Kansas was underwater, part of the Western Interior Seaway, which split North America into two land masses. These enormous chalk formations in Monument Rocks are the remains of carbonate deposits. To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter open for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld flashlight capable of producing different colors and illuminated the enormous chalk formations with warm white and red light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images.

This made me think that this could have been a camper somehow appearing in the movie "Interstellar", maybe on Miller's Planet.To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the camper with warm white and purple light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. And it's more fun than AI-generated images. This was photographed while Tim Little and I were teaching a night photography workshop at Nelson Ghost Town in Nevada. Two-minute long exposure at night. Rome for Improvement

Roman columns greeting the night. There once were many reliefs, Roman columns, facades, griffins, statues, and more here, all reminiscent of ancient Rome. Almost all have been destroyed by the elements or vandals. While this is often listed as an abandoned movie studio, it seems to actually be the abandoned site of a sculptor. I illuminated the night scene with warm white light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. In this case, I chose to mimic the lights from the town and the still-rising full moon, goosing it along a little and keeping the light very natural. This long exposure image shows the natural movement of the stars over 12 minutes' time.

Beyond the Walls of Stars

I photographed this while teaching a night photography workshop with Tim Little in Joshua Tree National Park. It feels like a privilege to photograph under such dark skies. But it's even more special when you're with a great group of people. This is the curvaceous adobe walls of Ryan Ranch. My night photography friends know how much I love to photograph these walls! To create this night photo, I set the camera on a tripod. I opened the camera shutter for a long time. While the shutter was open, I walked around with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light capable of producing different colors, and illuminated the scene with warm white light. During the exposure, all the light I shined on the subject was cumulative. This process is called "light painting". Why? Because one uses the flashlight as a paint brush, "brushing" on light, not paint. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. Our Infinite Stairway

My light casts long shadows at an abandoned oil refinery near the Mojave Desert that photographer Johanna Siegmann and I were exploring at night. It's been abandoned since the 1980s. The Gulf Between Right and Wrong

An old gravity pump greets the desert night as it leans against the wall, wondering if it'll be put to use again. I illuminated the night scene with warm white and red light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light during the long exposure. Light painting to illuminate subjects is a beautiful, addictive art, as you can walk around the scene, deciding what to bring to light and what to keep in shadow. I hope you like it. There was a High Wind Advisory this particular evening. While I went to talk to someone for a minute, gust of wind over 45 mph blew over my Nikon D750. It's not really night photography unless you have some of these mishaps, I suppose. I chose to photograph indoors for a while with my trusty old Pentax DLSR.
