Poinsettias.

Poinsettias are part of the Euphorbiaceae or Spurge family. Botanically, the plant is known as Euphorbia pulcherrima.

Many plants in the Euphorbiaceae family ooze a milky sap. Some people with latex allergies have had a skin reaction (most likely to the sap) after touching the leaves. For pets, the poinsettia sap may cause mild irritation or nausea. Probably best to keep pets away from the plant, especially puppies and kittens.

Poinsettias are not poisonous. A study at Ohio State University showed that a 50-pound child would have to eat more than 500 leaves to have any harmful effect. Plus poinsettia leaves have an awful taste. You might want to keep your pets from snacking on poinsettia leaves. Eating the leaves can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

The showy colored parts of poinsettias that most people think of as the flowers are actually colored bracts (modified leaves).

Poinsettias have also been called the lobster flower and the flame-leaf flower, due to the red color.

December 12th is Poinsettia Day, which marks the death of Joel Roberts Poinsett in 1851.

In Mexico, the Poinsettia is displayed in celebration of the "Dia de la Virgen", which is also coincidentally, December 12th.

The Aztecs used the Poinsettia bracts to make a reddish purple dye for fabrics, and used the sap medicinally to control fevers.

This beautiful waterfall was our destination after an hour-long ramble in the Whirinaki. A gorgeous spot to stop and have some lunch and play with the camera - a shower cap worked a treat on the lens to keep the water spray at a minimum.

Amazingly we saw no one else on this track both ways - just us and the native birds including a good number of Kaka which was great to see in a totally natural environment.

Happy Bench Monday and enjoy the new week!

I am glad i finally had some time for my hobby, to shoot landscapes, i am not so great as many here on Flickr but i enjoy shooting and showing the world my lovely place. Greetings from Honduras!

On Iceland you can have it all, flat land, mountains, snowy peaks, sea and volcanoes.

Beautiful colored trees on a lake near my homevalley in Upperstyria/Austria!

This, too, is from my favorite rose garden, Point Defiance Park, located in Tacoma, Washington. Such a beautiful rose garden! Actually, the whole park is worth seeing, if you never have! There's a zoo and aquarium; a five-mile drive that overlooks Puget Sound and Tacoma's Narrows Bridge; a beach and boating area; not only the rose garden, but many other flowers as well including the rhododendron garden when it's in bloom; the duck pond as well as many other wildlife including eagles, deer, and raccoons; and lastly, miles of trails to choose from for your hiking pleasure! So you see, this park includes it all--definitely something worth adding to your bucket list! Hope you all enjoy!

Love is funny, or it's sad

Or it's quiet, or it's mad

It's a good thing or it's bad

But beautiful

Beautiful to take a chance

And if you fall you fall

And I'm thinking I wouldn't mind at all

Love is tearful, or it's gay

It's a problem or it's play

It's a heartache either way

But beautiful

And I'm thinking if you were mine

I'd never let you go

And that would be but beautiful I know

I'd never let you go

And that would be but beautiful I know

Tulips (Tulipa) form a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes (having bulbs as storage organs). The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly colored, generally red, pink, yellow, or white (usually in warm colors). They often have a different colored blotch at the base of the tepals (petals and sepals, collectively), internally. Tulips originally were found in a band stretching from Southern Europe to Central Asia, but since the seventeenth century have become widely naturalised and cultivated. Flowering in the spring, they become dormant in the summer once the flowers and leaves die back, emerging above ground as a shoot from the underground bulb in early spring. The tulip's flowers are usually large and are actinomorphic (radially symmetric) and hermaphrodite (contain both male (androecium) and female (gynoecium) characteristics), generally erect, or more rarely pendulous, and are arranged more usually as a single terminal flower, or when pluriflor as two to three (e.g. Tulipa turkestanica), but up to four, flowers on the end of a floriferous stem (scape), which is single arising from amongst the basal leaf rosette. 11717

The butterflyfish are a group of conspicuous tropical marine fish of the family Chaetodontidae; the bannerfish and coralfish are also included in this group. The approximately 129 species in 12 genera are found mostly on the reefs of the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans. A number of species pairs occur in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, members of the huge genus Chaetodon. Butterflyfish look like smaller versions of angelfish (Pomacanthidae), but unlike these, lack preopercle spines at the gill covers. Some members of the genus Heniochus resemble the Moorish idol (Zanclus cornutus) of the monotypic Zanclidae. Among the paraphyletic Perciformes, the former are probably not too distantly related to butterflyfish, whereas the Zanclidae seem far less close. Butterflyfish mostly range from 12 to 22 cm in length. The largest species, the lined butterflyfish and the saddle butterflyfish, C. ephippium, grow to 30 cm. The common name references the brightly coloured and strikingly patterned bodies of many species, bearing shades of black, white, blue, red, orange, and yellow. Other species are dull in colour. Many have eyespots on their flanks and dark bands across their eyes, not unlike the patterns seen on butterfly wings. Their deep, laterally narrow bodies are easily noticed through the profusion of reef life. The conspicuous coloration of butterflyfish may be intended for interspecies communication. Butterflyfish have uninterrupted dorsal fins with tail fins that may be rounded or truncated, but are never forked. 31215
