Wild Black Bear Sow in Ontario, Canada

Grizzly bears, brown bear, are majestic symbols of the wild. Both the hump and the claws are traits associated with a grizzly bear’s exceptional digging ability. Grizzlies are often dark brown, but can vary from very light cream to black. The long guard hairs on their backs and shoulders frequently have white tips and give the bears a "grizzled" appearance, hence the name "grizzly."

Taking hikes in and around the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, I often come across black bears. Never have I come so close as this time however. While coming over a hill into some tall grass I looked up and there he was! I think we were both a little surprised although I am sure he heard me coming. I happily backed slowly away as I kept my eyes on him.

(I do carry bear spray just in case, but have never had to use it. I also use a telephoto lens and crop my pictures so if you are trying to get a close up with a cell phone camera, you are endangering the life of yourself and the bear.)

Thanks in advance for all your wonderful comments. I may not return every comment here. I will try to look at your photostream, give favorites when possible, and return the favor of commenting on your work...which I believe is more beneficial to you in the end.

One of the polar bear cubs at Seaworld Queensland, it would be so nice to go back and see them again soon.No photos, it is pouring with rain that we need so bad, but it sure dampens the mood, so to the archives it is!

I've just spent the last three evenings on line with MicroSoft technicians, and they still can't figure out what's wrong with my computer. I wish I has started with Apple before buying all my software.

This is an HDR shot of a bridge in Bear Creek Park in Surrey. I'm afraid the water trickling over the rocks didn't show up like I wanted it to.

I spent the day at Bear Butte and stayed to witness the sunset. It was not as dramatic as I hoped, but still cast a nice pink glow over the area. This image was taken from a vantage point down one of those roads with "no outlet" posted and where you just may get high centered if you are not in a vehicle with a lot of clearance. The road I took was east of Bear Butte and was actually called "Gravel Road". This is near the infamous Buffalo Chip Campground and in August some 500 thousand bikers from all over the world will descend on the area for the 77th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Mato Paha or "Bear Mountain" is the Lakota name given to this site. To the Cheyenne, it is "Noahvose." This geological formation is one of several intrusions of igneous rock in the Black Hills that formed millions of years ago. The mountain is sacred to many American Indian tribes who come here to hold religious ceremonies. Please be respectful of worshippers and their religious practices.

Artifacts dating back 10,000 years have been found near Bear Butte. In more recent times, however, the Cheyenne and Lakota people have maintained a spiritual tie to this mountain.

Notable leaders including Red Cloud, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull have all visited Bear Butte. These visits culminated with an 1857 gathering of many Indian nations to discuss the advancement of white settlers into the Black Hills.

George A. Custer, who led an expedition of 1,000 men into the region, camped near the mountain. Custer verified the rumors of gold in the Black Hills. Bear Butte then served as a landmark that helped guide the rush of invading prospectors and settlers into the region.

This is a young black bear (about 1½ years) who would normally still be with her mother. We were hearing that Mom had been killed on the highway. So this little one was foraging for wild blueberries which were very plentiful under the very tall ferns. The only indication that there was a bear in the field was the ferns moving...until the little bear stood up!!!
