barbie basics 2012 (louboutin face) + my new cutting dress

This is what I wore out earlier this month for a dinner outing with friends at Rosa Mexicano and a ride on The Washington Wheel at National Harbor! ...Along with my long fleece coat and a scarf because it was chilly and very windy!

My ensemble for the evening consisted of my Baltogs wet look black lycra spandex long sleeve leotard from nydancewear.com, a black wet look lycra spandex maxi skirt with mesh inset panels slit up one thigh from greatglam.com, shiny black Platino Luxe 40 denier pantyhose from shapings.com over Hanes Alive Barely There support hose from onehanesplace.com and my black leather look knee boots from lanebryant.com.

Another pic of Katniss in the LBD line from Barbie Basics. I think she is amazing!

My visit home to Iowa was far too short. I've only seen my niece Alaina a handful of times since she's been born, so it's like meeting a new person each time. This time, though, she had no trouble remembering my that my name was "Aunt Danielle" (after the initial introduction). We did have to work on the basics, though... after she protested because I had the camera pointed at her, I had to explain that holding cameras and pointing them at people was just something her Aunt Danielle did and that I couldn't stop. She seemed more accepting after that... as though she respected it as a personal problem. I even let her take an image using the Hasselblad (don't worry, it was on a tripod).

And the sweetest moment was my last night there. I had fallen asleep on the couch, which is right beside her bedroom downstairs. She woke up screaming and crying, and I was able to make it to her room first. She didn't question my role, just wrapped her arms around me and said she had had a bad dream and then in another minute she was falling back into the covers, already asleep again.

She probably won't remember that when she's older, but I always will.

One of my favorite dolls.

...this year we are keeping it simple around here for Christmas....

On Monday I brought the box (with boxes) of Christmas decorations up from the cellar and I have slowly begun to decorate...I only put 5 pieces so far:

~ the 3 dimensional plywood tree/ candle holder (from Habitat)

~ the handmade reindeer from salted dough (decorated with little details made with golden ink) I made last year during one of my Art&Crafts in English sessions with mighty, little students

~ two ...gigantic woolen socks, tied to the stairs up (not seen here - picture to come)

~ the pair of wooden ice skates which is hanging on one of the window handles seen here

~ and the two handmade angels from Munieca, purchased last year via Etsy (seen in comments)

This year I've decided to be decorating little by little, adding something every now and then until I feel that the outcome is ready. And while last year I created a winter Wonderland as among a few lovely others, wonderful Kirsten from Simply Grove had blogged about it , this year I have a need ofr basics, keeping it simple and an attitude for less is more.

Barbie Basics model no. 11 — collection 002

She checks her phone messages.

Huh!!! Aphrodite Overload!? This probably proves how I learned to love the head sculpt as majority of the dolls in this last installment of my wishlist are sporting the Aphrodite. I love Kentucky Derby Barbie’s face, especially her eyebrows. I’m not really into the sweet face but I want variety in my collection. I recently purchased 50th Anniversary Barbie (I’m still partial with the design of her gown. Not liking the sequins running down her torso) and Barbie Basics 3.0 Model # 7 as you’ve seen on my Shopping Spree 2012 Part 3 and Shopping Spree 2012 Part 5. I still need to find Barbie Basics 2.0 Model # 7. I never really wanted her but I think with restyling she could look fierce. 2009 Holiday Barbie AA is really beautiful but she needs to get out of her “prom/sweet 16 dress”. I’m hoping to get Platinum Label Rush of Rose Gold Barbie this June 13th. I really need to wake up early that day as they sell out really fast. Then I have to decide whether to keep her or to sell her as I won’t see the actual doll until she is shipped to me. Another Platinum Label doll that I want is Pinch of Platinum Barbie as I’m more into cocktail dresses than ball gowns. I do love her “supposed to be” bleached eyebrows but that doesn’t translate well to the production doll. Instead of a toned down paint job, they thin out her eyebrows which looks tacky. I do love her sort of lime green eyes with smokey eye shadow, which is a lovely and unusual touch to her color palette. Another issue is the change of hair style of the production doll. I would looove to restyle her hair close to her prototype.

sitting on the balcony and enjoy a coffee is great

I’m also now displaying my work at 500px

I’ve taken many pictures of this fresh water post, in Swanage bay, but I thought I’d try something a little different this time. I’ve seen many great minimalist images, usually taking advantage of snow or fog to create scenes that have cut out all the details, leaving the scene with just the basics, which are very effective. Without the aid of these conditions I’ve used a long exposure to smooth the water and sky, and darkened the sand in photoshop/silver efex. I’m not sure if I’ve achieved the simplicity I had in mind but it’s something I haven’t tried before-so I’m counting it as a win!

Thanks for looking

I’m sure you guys have seen the newly sneaked pics of The Barbie Look Fall 2013 Collection from blogs and from flickr members. As of now though, my pics will remain pixilated not until these dolls will be officially added to the shop.

I wanted to post this as I always try to pour my thoughts on the dolls as they come out fresh, and of course being the opinionated person that I am, I want to let everyone know how I feel about them.

You guys probably know that the Blonde has the Lara face sculpt and the Brunette has the Mackie face sculpt. Both of which have the Barbie Basics 2.0 face paint screening. I apologize as I’m gonna be a Debbie Downer. These two face sculpts are probably the most overused sculpts and at this point we’re kind of tired by them. There’s just so many sculpts out there that needs to be in the spotlight. However, I do think that it’s better for BC to release dolls with these sculpts early on and release the edgier and newer sculpts that we like later on. I was preparing to be dissatisfied by the Mackie doll but I can’t deny that I like her. I love her white knit dress but I’m not quite sure with her brown boots or her hairstyle. The Lara doll looks great as well and I like that she’s not tanned skin like Basics 2.0 Lara. They also changed her lip color this time. I would have loved her more though if she had the Basics 1.0 Lara face paint screening instead of 2.0. But she just might turn out to be spectacular IRL. I really like her dress and the print and I love that it is paired with black tights. My issue with her though is that she is wearing an overused pair of low boots which is a “go-to” shoe sculpt that Mattel designers choose whenever a Barbie doll is wearing tights. I would have LOVED a lace-up ankle boots instead, or maybe the shoe sculpt that Sinatra Barbie has, only in all black this time.

I was kind of disappointed that there’s only two fashion packs offered for this collection. Though this is good for my wallet, I’m still hoping we’ll see two more in the coming days. We have Winter Weekend and Party Perfect which both seem like a pass for me. I’m gonna have to wait for more pics with dolls shown wearing the fashions.

I don’t know about you but I’m kinda bored with the jewelries used. The Basics dolls mostly have these jewelries and those sculpts need to take a rest. Call me “technical” but I do feel that a new jewelry sculpt will elevate the look of the dolls. I do appreciate the new sculpts used for the fashion packs like the fan, the golf set, the tea set and the ski set. Those are definitely what I want to see.

Hmmm…Let me guess. Lea and Aphrodite will make an appearance for the next collection. I personally am not ready for another Aphrodite doll. Can we get Pazette, Louboutin, Mermaid, Basics AA Ken and Daria next?

Thoughts?

Salem represents some of the African American guys of today! He is a fully repainted Barbie Basics Ken. He is also artistically anatomically correct. He also has a tattoo on his neck. All artwork has been done by Doll Anatomy.
