In my highly incapacitated state I managed to walk the "easy" way down to Giant's Causeway - the basalt formations that are absolutely breathtaking - and then hike back up. The basalt seen on the shores of this part of the coast cooled in 2 ways - globularly when it was slow cooling, and in hexagonal columns when it cooled quickly encased in water.
