Steps from basalt chunks (here a field stone) over crushed stone and gravel to basalt powder. Paving stones are laid on gravel, then fine gravel and the joints are filled with the finest grade of basalt flour.
At 2500 km², the Vogelsberg is the largest contiguous volcanic area in Central Europe. There are large basalt quarries here.

Der Vogelsberg ist mit 2500 km² das größte zusammenhängende Vulkangebiet Mitteleuropas. Es gibt hier große Basaltsteinbrüche.
Over a period of 20 million years, giant fissures would split open the earth in eastern Washington, time after time spewing molten lava over tens of thousands of square miles, creating multiple layers of now dried and cracked basalt rock. So many layers that, in some places, there are over 10,000 feet of them. Each layer is about 75 to 100 feet thick, a few of which can be seen above near the Potholes Reservoir. These lava beds extend over eastern Washington between 3 rivers, the Spokane, Columbia and the Snake, and into parts of Idaho and Oregon. Then, about 10,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, huge lakes of melt water were dammed up by arms of a glacier, which eventually melted, and this huge amount of water roared over the basalt beds, carving, tearing and gouging as it went, creating the Channeled Scablands visible today. The geology of eastern Washington is unique and well worth studying, and even better, visiting in person!
Fingal’s Cave - Staffa
Fingal's Cave is a sea cave on the uninhabited island of Staffa, it is known for its natural acoustics. The National Trust for Scotland owns the cave as part of a national nature reserve. It became known as Fingal's Cave after the eponymous hero of an epic poem by 18th century Scottish poet and historian James Macpherson.
To get to this point a small boat drops you off at a stone jetty which is buffeted by the Atlantic waves, it’s then a case of walking along the basalt rock formations for around 100 yards before you reach the entrance and viewing platform. The boat goes away and leaves you on the island for around an hour and a quarter, it then returns to collect you. Well worth the trip but not if you have any mobility issues.
There is a lot of information about the cave here:-
Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.
Inspiring vistas abound at Black Basalt Beach. A paradise for anyone longing for the beautiful places of SL.
According to local Icelandic folklore, these large basalt columns were once trolls trying to pull ships from the ocean to shore. ... The man followed the trolls down to Reynisfjara where he froze them, ensuring that they would never kill again.

Reynisfjara is without a doubt the most famous beach in all of Iceland. What sets Reynisfjara apart from all the rest are its black volcanic sands, smooth pebbles, unique rock formations, overall moody atmosphere and huge waves crashing on the shore.
Snaesfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland, 2022
Iceland is sitting on a rift zone between two tectonic plates. Volcanic activity gave birth and formed this island. Therefore 80% of Iceland‘s land mass is made up of basalt.
I was absolutely amazed to find this location during our last journey. It would not be out of place in Iceland, but it is actually in Australia. I had no idea places like this even existed in our beautiful country. There is always something new to discover though. I decided to process this scene in black and white, as I thought that textures, detail and contrast would really shine in monochrome.

One of my favorite waterfalls in Yellowstone National Park, Undine Falls, cascades over a cliff formed by a 700,000 year old basalt lava flow. Lava Creek below the falls is littered with basalt boulders that have fallen from the cliff.
A great morning on the long, stony Reynishverfi beach near Vík... I even had warm coffee with me! :-)
Nice while I was waiting for my long exposures to be finished ;-)
The sunrise created some really nice colors behind and above the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and the hexagonally shaped columnar basalt rising from the beach had this soft glow over it.

A portion of the Svartifoss waterfall in Skaftafell National Park, Iceland.
The rock at the base of the falls is a unique columnar basalt.
To know that the Caribbean island of Aruba was formed by volcanic processes, one need only to make the short trip to the eastern Atlantic Ocean side of the isle where wave action batters the shore due to the steady tradewinds from the northeast. This wave action leaves the underlying rock exposed. In the foreground you see basalt rocks and a basalt outcropping on the left; in the middle ground on the other side of this little cove you see the remains of an ancient lava flow.
Well, I never shoot landscapes, I believe I don't have the talent required to capture the feeling, but this one at BBB I really wanted to give it a try.
For some, Black Basalt Beach was their home, for some was just a relaxing moment hearing the beautiful tunes of the sim and for some was just the place they created their wonderful captures....
My greatest respects to the creator of this amazing sim... it surely will be missed....

Cooling joints in the basalt are visible across the Yellowstone River at the Calcite Springs Overlook. The basalt sits on top of Pliocene/Pleistocene gravels on the river’s east side.
A basalt dike cuts trough Paleozoic limestones in this road cut along the Chief Joseph Highway (WY 296) in Shoshone National Forest northwest of Cody Wyoming. The basalt is part of a volcanic complex known as the Absaroka Volcanics Supergroup which is Eocene in age and was active between 53 and 43 million years ago.
An Igneous dike is a planar to irregularly-planar igneous intrusion that cut across country rocks in a vertical or oblique orientation. A dike forms when lava pushes up through cracks, fractures or fissures in a host rock. In the Absaroka Volcanics dikes usually radiate out from volcanic centers in swarms. At this location the host rocks are Paleozoic limestones and dolomites that were deposited in a shallow sea and then uplifted during the creation of the Rocky Mountains. This photo shows the top of the dike at a point where quit intruding upward into the host rock at this particular location. This is a 2 dimensional view of a 3 dimensional planar igneous body.
