Two buildings in Bodie, California that seem to share a common wall were the International Order of Odd Fellows and the DeChambeau Hotel. This room was part of the Hotel. The long row of benches down the middle of the room and the odd thing with what appear to be mailboxes are not present in old photos of the room. So, who knows where these items came from.

Bodie has been a ghost town since mining ceased in 1941. Luckily most of the town was owned by J. S. Cain who hired a caretaker to look after the town. In 1962, the State of California bought the town and turned it into a state park maintaining the buildings in a state of arrested decay.

Back on the first Saturday of November 1984, I rode a Pacific Railroad Society fantrip to Barstow, California. It originated at Union Station in Los Angeles; I boarded at Fullerton. The train was named the Desert Scout in honor of a Santa Fe train from decades prior.

The primary attraction of the trip was getting to ride over the (then) freight only ATSF Third District between Fullerton and San Bernardino. Of course, this line did host one revenue passenger train each year - on New Years morning, Amtrak's westbound Southwest Limited (later Chief) detoured via Fullerton to avoid disrupting the Rose Parade in Pasadena.

The unannounced highlight of the trip was a ride through the middle of Santa Fe's sprawling yard at Barstow, so the train could be turned on the balloon track there. Once correctly aligned for the return to Los Angeles, the excursion backed into the depot at Barstow for a long layover. Since it was a warm, sunny fall afternoon in the desert, no one seemed to mind.

During the layover, a few fans and I hiked up on the North 1st Avenue overpass (recently demolished - more ETTS) to shoot some of the former Amtrak SDP40Fs recently acquired by ATSF for conversion into freight units. Several of the big locomotives were on hand, awaiting a trip to San Bernardino for rebuilding.

The narrow bridge was not the greatest place for photography. After a couple of near misses with trucks, I was more than ready to occupy a piece of furniture that the town was informally nicknamed for, with an appropriate frosty adult beverage in front of me.
