Baking can be a lot of work, but it's totally worth the effort when the results are this awesome.
This is Prima Dolly Peony. The cake and baking items are part of a set for Lori dolls that are sold at Target.
Baking bread in the courtyard, it is being formed into rounds before going into the wood fired home made outdoor oven, in Umbria, central Italy. The backlighting illuminates her hair and clothes against the wall in shadow behind.

Cook's been with me for so long, I really can't remember. Her first range was an old cast iron number; wood fired — no knobs or dials, seat-of-the-pants cooking, proper skills! Then it was gas; big, semi-professional — oven the size of a suckling pig or whole lamb if she desired, cast iron trivets you'd be proud to lift in the weight room. Now, the Estate's kitchen has gone all electric at the great expense of bringing in the power underground and replacing Cook's beloved cookware — hardly any of it, including her treasured copper ware and stove-top coffee pots, her 'coffee engines', work on the newfangled induction cooktop.
Today, she has the day off. Why not? Now she's shouldered the housekeeper's duties, following the "incident", she's more than earned a day off. Besides, with her out of the kitchen, I've made bagels.
I used that spelling because that seems to be "on trend". My recipe is for beigels, same thing, archaic spelling. It is said to be etymologically derived from German — meaning ring, or bracelet. Mine are traditional beigels, not pumped up mega-bagels — polite, 2 ounce beigels. They're an easy morning's work for me; probably half that for Cook.
When she gets back, how much trouble will I be in for violating her kitchen? I'm hoping a fresh bagel, some creamcheese and lox will win her over. Besides, I haven't left a very big mess.
My entry to Moda Bake Shop Sliced Contest (Auditions).
This version of my week planner is designed for two family members (each member has its own row) - half of charm pack is needed to make it (for colorful parts) plus fabric for white sashing, fabrics for back and binding.
In version for four family members one charm pack is needed (for colorful parts) plus fabric for white sashing, fabrics for backing and binding.
It can be also used at the office.
Corners of each square are pockets to put there cards with plan for each day of the week or another information. These corners were made from 1/4 of charms and they are sewn between the rows.
Buckle is used to indicate day of the week. When the day changes, buckle is moved to another.
Depending on weight of the buckle (mine is quite heavy) buttons for secure the strip are needed.
Machine quilted (cotton batting was used) and machine bound.

My grandmother passed away 8 years ago today. She baked pies almost daily, so today I baked her favorite pie in her memory. I love you Grandma Rose.
I was just fooling actually, much as I'd have liked to be baking dressed like this I just could not get organised today, maybe another time.
Here I am...between two of my freshly made Sour Cream Coffee Cakes...rolling the dough into a rope to shape into a crescent for the Chocolate Dipped Almond Horns while singing Christmas songs...lol.
Yes folks...I am a woman of many talents and baking is one of them. I baked 4 Hvnly Sour Cream Coffee Cakes yesterday, 2 were purchased by someone and the other 2 are for family gatherings. I also tested out a cookie recipe that was given to us in a holiday card we received this year.
In this picture I am working on a batch of those cookies. They are Chocolate Covered Almond Horns...yummy!
I love the holidays for many reasons, but one of them is because I love to bake. It's also a long standing tradition I learned from my paternal grandmother (Italian side.) She passed away in Sept. 2000 and the Christmas after her passing I baked up a storm because it helped me still feel connected to her. The 5 Christmases after her passing saw less of Hvnly's baking because it only made me sad. She was the one person I was close to, the rock that I could ALWAYS lean on, and when she left a part of me left with her. Now that I have my own little family I realize how important baking was to my grandmother and how it is important to me. So to keep her memory and tradition alive and well I vow to continue baking every Christmas for as long as I possibly can, and hope that someone will continue this tradition after I am gone.
Happy Holidays to all of my Flickr friends and family.
