My backyard

I rarely would see any eastern gray squirrels in my back yard until this winter when a family of three discovered the bird feeders and peanuts I provide for the wildlife. Now they visit on a regular basis and are pretty entertaining to watch and, of course, photograph! This photo was taken through my sunroom sliding glass door. These not so shy squirrels are often peeping in and scratching on the glass to get my attention for more peanuts. 😊

What an interesting mixture: walls, roofs, trees, a chimney and two windows. It was a pleasure to take a photo...

This is our resident backyard bunny. He lives free but he is getting used to me being in the garden, too. Yesterday, he was relaxed while chewing away on our grass beside the hedge. I crawled slowly toward him as he kept an eye on me. It allowed me to get this lovely portrait of him with the bokeh of light coming through the hedge behind him. When I got my shot, I left quietly and he continued to munch away. I watched him from inside through a dining room window. At that point, he was completely stretched out on his belly still chewing away.

Backyard visitors. This is a pink and grey galah. very common in this area. The colourful bird in foreground (out of focus) is a rainbow lorikeet. A beautiful and feisty bird which unfortuantely is an introduced species and bit of a pest for the endemic species such as the galah and other parrots. The galahs are real characters and very intelligent (like most parrots).

I took these photos to try out my new telephoto zoom lense. A christmas present that I will use when winter comes again and the surf is up.

It was a sunrise that makes you put down your coffee and go outside on a below zero morning. I hope I did it justice :)

So, just kind of goofing around during a snowfall. 6-sec exposure (giving it that mustiness, the snow was really coming down at this point) with an ND8 filter and all the settings way up (down?): Exp Bias -5, f/22. But of course, that wasn't enough thus, the first 3 sec's were spent swiveling the camera back and forth on the tripod. Whole bunch of extra shit in post and viola! "Eess is what's we gots"

The day following a freezing rain with some frozen droplets on the twigs.

My backyard friends came to visit me last month! Living on a bluff brings me a variety of wildlife throughout the year. As you can tell, the changing of the leaves had just started, still have a ways to go before more beautiful colors are seen, if the rain doesn’t damage them first! For the flowers are great blessings.

For the flowers have their angels, even the words of God’s creation.

For the flower glorifies God and the root parries the adversary.

For there is a language of flowers.

For the flowers are peculiarly the poetry of Christ.

While sitting out on my backyard patio trying to figure out how some Ninja Squirrels were getting into my bird feeders, I noticed some fluttering between branches near my small pond. As took a closer look I couldn't believe my eyes...WARBLERS!!!! Not quite sure why they paid a visit as I am in the middle of a large metropolitan city...but thankful they did... I only managed to get limited snaps with my camera as I wasn't properly prepared...and spent the next several days attempting to get some some decent shots with these uncooperative little guys...Hopefully Ill have more to come as Ive seen 10 different species so far...

..I think I caught "Warbler Fever"! :>)

While doing some backyard birdwatching the other day, it was just so hot there wasn't much going on, so I decided to close the window and put down my camera.

Moments later this hawk swooped down and got one of my doves. It happened so quickly it took a few moments to register what I'd just seen. While I watched, it started plucking the feathers so I grabbed my camera to get a few shots.

Just goes to show you never know who's going to show up next. Or when.

** Taken through the window so not as clear as I'd like.

Female ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) approaching a bee balm flower in my garden. I have bee balm, red hummingbird salvia, and red crocosmia planted along the back porch, as well as two hummingburd nectar feeders nearby. I llove to sit on the porch and watch these remarkable little birds dart back and forth from flowers to feeders. Backyard bird.

This broad-tail hummingbird is enjoying the feeder in my backyard. I'm sitting in a yard chair, waiting to catch it as it comes to and then leave the feeder, just out of the shot. It's been a very wet spring and the trees are very green, creating a great background. I love the translucent wings and the ruby flash of his gorget. I think that means thank you, but he shows it when he's happy or mad.

A vivid portrait of a hummingbird captured mid-flight, highlighting its detailed plumage and dynamic motion. The green blurred background complements the bird's colorful appearance.

It's interesting all our locals have claimed this community fence to hangout..some sit & call out to there mates, once arrived they both go off to the feeders or into the trees.

Thanks for your visit, enjoy your day! We are having an extreme heat wave here in the Pacific Northwest...triple digits!!

December 2022

This Ruby-throated hummingbird showed up at the feeder in my buddy's backyard. I had my camera with me hoping for an opportunity. The pic of the oriole I just posted showed up just minutes before this hummingbird.

This guy came into the backyard yesterday. I went out to make sure the deer could find it's way back over the fence. Instead he started following me around. Had to finally make enough noise for him to leave. Then hung out in the green belt, munching away for about 20 minutes. Before he left, I told him to watch out for the local Cougar.
