"The fountain of Praça do Peixe is authored by Eng. João Honorato da Fonseca Regala, just like the Chafariz do EspÃrito Santo or das Cinco Bicas. The material used in its construction (limestone) came from Outil and Ançã, since this type of stone did not exist in Aveiro. In fact, because there is no stone, in the 19th century, there was a need to destroy the medieval wall that surrounded the city, for the civil construction and for the works of the bar.
Returning to the fountain, it should be noted that it was built by the City Council, in 1876, in a place where fish traffic was concentrated, coming from the Ria and several sea fishing beaches, due to the proximity of the Cais dos Botirões and the Mercantéis, as well as the fish market.
