Portrait of a Tawny Owl which is found throughout Britain right up to the north of Scotland, but is not present in Ireland. I have heard a male calling in our street most nights for the past three weeks... 7.15pm on 11th September and it's calling again in the garden…

I can hear you but I won't
Some look for trouble while others don't
There's a thousand reasons I should go about my day
And ignore your whispers, which I wish would go away, oh-oh-oh
You're not a voice
You're just a ringing in my ear
And if I heard you, which I don't
I'm spoken for, I fear
Everyone I've ever loved is here within these walls
I'm sorry, secret siren, but I'm blocking out your calls
I've had my adventure, I don't need something new
I'm afraid of what I'm risking if I follow you
Into the unknown
Into the unknown
What do you want? 'Cause you've been keeping me awake
Are you here to distract me so I make a big mistake?
Or are you someone out there who's a little bit like me?
Who knows deep down I'm not where I'm meant to be?
Every day's a little harder as I feel my power grow
Don't you know there's part of me that longs to go
Into the unknown
Into the unknown
Where are you going?
Don't leave me alone
How do I follow you
Into the unknown?
It was a warm but completely overcast December day, so I went for a walk in the park not expecting anything. There was a little open sky to the west, so I stayed to see if anything would happen sunsetwise, and magically it did. I love those kinds of surprises.
Formerly a UK breeding bird but more regularly seen in Europe they tend to turn up in this country on migration if we get an easterly wind at the right moment.
We got those conditions in early September this year resulting in only the third I’ve seen in Northumberland while I was on Holy Island (Lindisfarne).
This stunningly tame individual was hopping around on the path looking for insects. It looked a bit lethargic for a while but after about an hour had perked up enough to fly off.
A member of the Woodpecker family, not much bigger than a Sparrow, but behaves totally differently to other Woodpeckers, not climbing up and down on trees searching for food.
Strange, but last picture of the series of this day was done at #Wik #castle.
It is kind of interesting story. My friend phoned me and asked if I have been there, I said no... We went to visit this amazing castle on the lake of #Ekoln.

"Morana, goddess of death and frost, would descend upon the world with her icy grip, whispering of eternity as she cloaked the land in snowbound silence. No matter how the people pleaded, she would not yield — her heart forged from frozen rivers and ancient sorrow. But Zimsterla, goddess of spring’s eternal dance, was never far behind. Daughter of Svantevit and beloved of Dogoda, bringer of gentle breezes, she emerged radiant and glorious, her presence a living promise of rebirth..."

So much area to hike with so few people to encounter. This is just at the edge of our beautiful valley.
Texture of Water what you see when you have the sun shade open in the car and a monsoon starts up, but an interesting shot, wet in North Carolina.
"But is that true? Because a tree in spring buds and comes greenly into leaf, are those leaves therefore the tree? If the newborn twigs and their leaves were all that existed, they would form a vague halo of green suspended in mid-air, but surely that is not the tree. The leaves, by themselves, are no more than trivial fluttering decoration. It is the trunk and limbs that give the tree its grandeur and the leaves themselves their meaning. There is not a discovery in science, however revolutionary, however sparkling with insight, that does not arise out of what went before. 'If I have seen further than other men,' said Isaac Newton, 'it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants." — Adding a Dimension: Seventeen Essays on the History of Science, by Isaac Asimov.

Cloudy but dry start to the last month of 2021 in Vancouver
I captured this image of this majestic mountain which lies in Washington State, USA right from my home, 100+km away, in Vancouver, Canada,
Mount Baker[...] is one of the snowiest places in the world; in 1999, Mount Baker Ski Area [...] set the world record for recorded snowfall in a single season—1,140 in (2,900 cm).
At 10,781 ft (3,286 m), it is the third-highest mountain in Washington State[...]. It is visible from much of Greater Victoria, Nanaimo, British Columbia, Greater Vancouver, and, to the south, from Seattle (and on clear days Tacoma) in Washington.
... but we do not represent hope for them!
Let us keep the flowers in the soil; no plucking!

A large true Buzzard ( genus Buteo ) with broad wings and a short rounded tail which makes it easy to recognize in flight. It lives in mountain areas and in hilly country in woodland and savanna regions.
Its regular plumage shows a dark back, white below and a rufous tail. There is also a dark morph.
Besides Eastern Africa it can also be found in south western Africa.
It has a close relative in Southern Africa, the Jackal Buzzard
The prey of the Augur Buzzard mostly consists of small reptiles and mammals but it will also take large insects, small birds and will feed on road kills.

………But there was no show - Spiderman was obviously off on the World wide Web somewhere! Just have to make do with boring old Moths then, who for some reason seem to fly off when Batty Bat comes out to play!! For the interested I created this Spooky Tabletop shot by simply Bluetac'ing a wobbly translucent toy bat on to my Mac screen, whilst displaying a Web shot I took at Tarn Hows (Cumbria) and ‘Click’ this ‘Spooky Night’ shot was taken! The eyes were added using the Radial Filter tools in Lightroom 6. Don’t be too frightened and do have a Happy Smile On Saturday folks. Alan:-) HSoS…….

Many thanks to all those who view, fav or comment my pictures. I very much appreciate it.
I would have given you all of my heart
But there's someone who's torn it apart
And she's taken just all that I had
But if you want, I'll try to love again
Baby I'll try to love again, but I know
The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know, the first cut is the deepest
When it come to being lucky, she's cursed
When it come to loving me, she's worse
I still want you by my side
Just to help me dry the tears that I've cried
And I'm sure gonna give you a try
And if you want, I'll try to love again
Baby I'll try to love again, but I know
The first cut is the deepest
Baby I know, the first cut is the deepest
But when it come to being lucky, she's cursed
When it come to loving me, she's worse

The most terrifying thing about October is all of the events. I might fall over. My inventory is bonechilling.
There's a whole bunch of new stuff from Zibska, like the lovely dress at Rock Your Rack 2017, the stunning eyeshadow from The Nightmare, or more great lipstick from over at Industrie! Definitely check out the last event, a new one with lots of great minimalist and industrial inspired items. Highly recommend.
In the heart of binge watching psychological horror, enjoy this picture. <3

On the higher mountains the first snow has fallen, but here around this meander of river the last colors of autumn are resisting. I think it deserved a photo.
Sulle montagne più alte è caduta la prima neve, ma intorno a questo meandro del fiume resistono le ultime cromie autunnali; credo meritassero una foto.

I think it must be Aikos hair that was stuck on this little ice heads face - giving us a smile
Saying Brrrr, it's cold outside, the wind is arctic and very cold
But it's Monday and who can't smile when we have new pages to make in our life book, new experiences, new people to meet, new food to taste
And not to mention another week has gone and I'm closing in to someone coming home, for every Monday that goes
I just love Mondays

Love is funny, or it's sad
Or it's quiet, or it's mad
It's a good thing or it's bad
But beautiful
Beautiful to take a chance
And if you fall you fall
And I'm thinking I wouldn't mind at all
Love is tearful, or it's gay
It's a problem or it's play
It's a heartache either way
But beautiful
And I'm thinking if you were mine
I'd never let you go
And that would be but beautiful I know

No! Not taken this Autumn, but a previously unposted shot from January this year. I don't normally go back in the archives too much but in tribute to the forthcoming Short Eared Owl season (and the fact it has rained or been miserable weather for at least 2 weeks) I have included a shot of my closest encounter to date with a perched bird.
I had spent a few hours at the site when one of the group decided they needed to go home. As this owl was perched on a post which they would have to walk past I decided to go along too and see how far we got before it flew off. Foolishly didn't take my tripod so had to struggle hand holding the 600mm - but I think the fact he/she didn't fly until we were quite close gave me extra strength.
Taken during the golden hour.
Although we do have a year round population, with some breeding in the North, numbers are swelled in the winter with migrants from Scandanavia, Russia and Iceland. I think this is one of them.
Things are a bit slow when I’m relegated to shooting a succulent in my backyard, but my plant seemed in the mood for a portrait, and I was too lazy to look elsewhere. So here she is.
________________________
The Succulent:
In botany, succulent plants, also known as succulents, are plants with parts that are thickened, fleshy, and engorged, usually to retain water in arid climates or soil conditions. The word succulent comes from the Latin word sucus, meaning "juice" or "sap."
Succulent plants may store water in various structures, such as leaves and stems. The water content of some succulents can get up to 90 to 95%. The habitats of these water-preserving plants are often in areas with high temperatures and low rainfall, such as deserts, but succulents may be found even in alpine ecosystems growing in rocky soil. Succulents are characterized by their ability to thrive on limited water sources, such as mist and dew, which makes them equipped to survive in an ecosystem that contains scarce water sources.

Not technically perfect but I prefer it to the couple of other shots I took with a slightly different composition. Let's pretend it's from an FP4 neg.
