The child pictured below is one of roughly 7 million 'street children' scattered amongst Brazil's cities. With the top 1% of Brazil intaking 50% of the nation's income, the common reason for the families' abandonment of these children is due to their inability to feed them, with a noticeably growing cause being AIDS. These children often fall subject to human trafficking in an attempt to stay fed, commonly begin consuming drugs at very young ages, and sadly only have a life expectancy of less than 18 years.
I met this street child on the port of Salvador. At the time we met, he was taking drugs beside the ocean under a tree to which he slept the night before (link #1). The following day, I found him walking through Old Town very drugged out, seemingly lost (link #2).

Sadly, many also advocate that killing these children will prevent future human and drug trafficking. The infamous Candelaria Massacre, where it is believed that the killings of these children was staged by policemen, leaves a lasting impression on the struggles of these children. Those killed in the massacre are listed below:
Paulo Roberto de Oliveira, 11 years old
Anderson de Oliveira Pereira, 13 years old
Marcelo Cândido de Jesus, 14 years old
Valdevino Miguel de Almeida, 14 years old
"Gambazinho", 17 years old
Leandro Santos da Conceição, 17 years old
Paulo José da Silva, 18 years old
Marcos Antônio Alves da Silva, 20 years old

SAO PAULO, BRAZIL: Brazilian Estevao Silva da Conceicao (R) jokes with his daughter at the garden of his house at the "favela" (shanty town in portuguese) named Paraisopolis (Paradise Land) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Conceicao an inhabitant of the second biggest favela of the city, built his house without knowing the Catalan architect Antonio Gaudi (1852-1926). He constructed the house with stone, bricks and different ceramic objects like cups and tea plates. He also included a hanging garden with columns unmistakably related to Gaudi.
